A system for taxonomizing facial motions, the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), refers to two of these sections as: cheek raiser - marked specifically by the orbital region contracting & lid tightener - marked specifically by the palpebral region contracting (or, even more specifically by the preseptal area - but more on that on my FACS Cheat Sheet) Artists and FACS coders often confuse these two movements, which is totally understandable! How do we connect when we don't use words? Our exhibit @groote_museum_amsterdam explores how we communicate with facial expressions - and how we mirror and are affected by the expressions of others. And how will it impact us in the near future when virtual avatars elicit the same reactions? The Facial Action Coding System developed in psychological research is the scientific base for our exhibit, assuming that we can decode emotions by analyzing the use of facial muscles. By mapping the intricate facial musculature onto the visitors' faces, we're demonstrating how nuanced our nonverbal communication actually is. A neural network model then interprets the expressions as different emotions - the sometimes unconscious facial movements become explicit features and data. The experience culminates in a mimetic encounter with a Metahuman: the visitors' reactions are recorded and then displayed on a timeline in response to the dialogue. It becomes evident that mirroring emotions is a profoundly human strategy of empathy – even when our counterpart is not real.
