You keep seeing us for a reason, follow @lulzfile for more (🎥:tt @_socratic ) • A fallacy is a mistake in reasoning that looks convincing but isn’t actually valid. It’s like a trick in an argument that sounds logical on the surface but falls apart when you check the details. Common examples include attacking the person instead of the argument (ad hominem), assuming something is true just because many people say it is (bandwagon), or jumping to conclusions without enough evidence (hasty generalization). Fallacies aren’t just academic — they’re everywhere online, in debates, ads, and memes. Learning to recognize them helps you think clearer, argue smarter, and avoid being misled by something that sounds right but isn’t. • #memes #explorepage #philosophy #fallacies #philosophymemes

Let’s talk logical fallacies! One of the most common ones we see is the appeal to authority. This is when someones tries to use a position of authority as evidence to support an argument. This can look like: ⁣ ⁣ “I’m right because I’m a doctor.” ⁣ “I’m a personal trainer so I’m never wrong about fitness.” ⁣ ⁣ Now, is the appeal to authority completely useless and always wrong? Of course not. Experts are certainly more likely to know more about their respective field than the average individual. At the same time, however, that doesn’t mean that they’re never incorrect, and this alone should never be used as the sole basis upon which an argument is made. In other words, you need more than a mere “I’m the expert” defense. ⁣ ⁣ As you can see in this particular example, the “personal trainer” on the left is continually trying to deflect from addressing the argument by appealing to her own authority. At no point does she actually provide sound evidence to back up her claims. ⁣ ⁣ Just because you’re technically an expert in your field doesn’t mean that all the information you provide is accurate. And honestly, this applies to any profession. Trainers, dietitians, doctors, professors etc. are all prone to still getting stuff wrong. ⁣ ⁣ Yes, having credentials and qualifications is obviously great. But that alone is NOT enough to fulfill the burden of proof for a claim being made. ⁣ #LogicalFallacy #AppealToAuthority

Let's talk about logical fallacies Logical fallacies are an easy way to accidentally derail a conversation or find yourself on the wrong side of an argument. Be sure to check your reasoning and logic for flaws to ensure you arent using these. Thank you for watching! As always I appreciate your support! You wanted more logical fallacies! So of course I’m going to tackle one I keep seeing repeated on here. Any hate or bigotry is “that word” and shouldn’t be tolerated. But regardless of what you think is going on, criticizing the actions of a government or rhetoric of politicians, is not. Shutting down a conversation by claiming it is, is manipulation. We need to hold people accountable, even when it’s uncomfortable. #logicalfallacy #logicalreasoning #logic #palestine #freepalestine #gaza

Did you spot all the fallacies? Melanie: Everybody seems to be talking about cutting out sugar these days, so sugar must be bad for you. (Appeal to the masses) Stephanie: This war against sugar is nonsense. My grandmother ate a lot of sugar and lived to be 95. (Anecdotal fallacy, cherry picking, and hasty generalization) Melanie: The influencers I follow on social media all say sugar is literally toxic. (Appeal to irrelevant authority and emotions) Stephanie: Our ancestors have eaten sugar for centuries, if not millennia, so it can’t be that bad. (Appeal to tradition) Melanie: The problem is processed sugar, which is why I only eat natural sugar like honey and molasses. (Appeal to nature) Stephanie: People live longer than ever and we eat more sugar, so sugar is probably the reason. (False cause, single cause, mistaking correlation for causation) Melanie: But sugar always makes my kids so hyperactive! (Anecdotal fallacy, false cause) Stephanie: Actually that’s a myth. Besides, my doctor told me sugar in moderation is okay. (No fallacy here. It is not a fallacy to listen to the advice of a relevant expert. To learn more about sugar and hyperactivity, visit this link: https://www.science.org.au/curious/people-medicine/does-sugar-really-make-kids-hyper). Melanie: “Doctors” don’t know anything. They’re all paid shills for big sugar. (Ad hominem) Melanie teaches critical thinking, information literacy, and science literacy on her website (thinkingispower.com) and social media (@thinkingpowers). Stephanie has critical thinking videos and activities for kids on her site (critikid.com) and content for parents and teachers on social media (@critikid). #CriticalThinking #Metacognition #Science #Education #ScienceEducation #Teaching #Learning #Fallacy #Fallacies #LogicalFallacy #LogicalFallacies #sugar #falsecause #adhominem #appealtonature

The Straw Man is when someone twists your words into something extreme or ridiculous, then attacks that instead of your real point. The Empire used it to dismiss independence movements. Today, politicians, tabloids, and even people online still use it to shut down debate. #fallacies #strawman #debate #criticalthinking #britishhistory #empire #colonialhistory #language #propaganda #medialiteracy #historytok #politicaleducation #ukpolitics #argument #onlineculture #discord #tiktokpolitics #neurodiverselearning #irishhistory

Do you know the difference between vertical and lateral reading? Fact-checkers use lateral reading because it is faster, more efficient, and less biased than vertical reading. The SIFT method involves: S, stopping I, Investigating the source F, Finding better coverage and T, Tracing the information. We’ll summarize each point for you so you know how to SIFT. Did you know about this fact-checking method? Tell us in the comments and don’t hesitate to share this video with your loved ones! Initial beat produced by Shayzex Beats and remixed by us. We also did a post on SIFT that gets a little deeper into the process. You can find the link in our sources: tinyurl.com/SUFMethodSIFT #ScienceUpFirst #LaSciencedAbord #TogetherAgainstMisinformation
