"When you can’t count, do calculate!!!" This is my improvisation using the Fibonacci sequence. People who play drums often become good at math too, because the two are deeply connected especially when you practice them together. I learned to practice polyrhythms without getting confused by using simple math. Instead of memorizing patterns one by one, I separated my coordination and used calculation to see the entire rhythm as one complete picture. Here’s another example: counting rhythms based on the Golden Ratio can feel confusing at first. So instead, I practiced calculating the value of pi repeatedly and looked for the Golden Ratio in nature whenever I went out. Over time, I was able to play the Fibonacci sequence on the drums.
