MAKE SURE THAT YOU DON’T… • ❌ SCREW UP THE TAPER • Half marathon training is a LOT of work - and one of the worst things that can happen is showing up on race day with sore or tired legs because you failed to taper correctly. • 🚨 TAPER TIPS 🚨 🗓️ SHOULD BE A FEW DAYS - 2 WEEKS: Depending upon how long you’ve been running, how many half marathons you’ve done, and whether you’re using the race as training or a goal race. ⬇️ REDUCE MILEAGE & INTENSITY: For the first week, cut mileage back by about 20-30% the first week & 50-60% during race week. 💪🏼 LIMIT STRENGTH WORK: Especially lower body. During race week, stick to mobility, stretching, and low impact exercises. 💦 FOCUS ON FUEL & HYDRATION: You don’t need to do anything crazy, just be mindful about drinking a little more water & getting some good carbs and protein to help your body recover & prepare. 🧠 YOU WON’T LOSE FITNESS: I promise you. PARTY PACING MY SIS FOR HER FIRST HALF-MARATHON, NIKE AFTER DARK ❤️🎉 @mindeetran @nike @nikela @nikerunning @nikewomen wow what a core memory to cross the finish line with my sister for her FIRST half marathon milestone!!!! so freaking proud of her for this achievement— going into this, her goal was completion and not getting swept. her longest training run was 8 miles so we knew those last 5 miles were going to be a bit of a battle— she was going strong mile 1-7 and then mile 8 was the crashout mile (apparently for a lot of people too)— once we hit 10 and I checked the time, I knew she had a real shot at sub 3. had a little energy boost at mile 12 with our supportive bf+husband and then we proceeded to get faked out by all the “finish lines” 💀💀💀 I remember after the first fake-out she said “oh I’m cooked, I got nothing left” LMAOO somehow she found whatever ounce of energy was in there and made sub-3 happen! aside from all the negative conversations and complaints surrounding this event, I have to admit we had fun! no we didn’t go to the concert, no we didn’t get the pink slides— but we ran alongside 18,000 powerful women and we took back the night!!!!!!!! I am so proud of every single person who showed up and showed out!!!!!!!! I understand the timing of this race feels heavy given the current events and ICE raids in LA. It’s not lost upon me that running this race IS a privilege— However in a time that feels very divisive and uncertain, I think we should celebrate community whenever possible. If this was your first half marathon, you did something extremely remarkable and you should be super proud 🤍 congratulations queens!!!!! 13.1 miles ✅ I ran my first half marathon Friday night and it was awesome, but also got me thinking ALOT. This half was interesting because it was in the dark, and everyone started at their own time with a goal to finish at midnight according to your pace. No timing devices were allowed, so I ran down the mountain in the dark with no phone, no watch, no music, just simply running and thinking. I honestly didn’t know I was capable of this, it was a mental and physical challenge. There were times when I just wanted to stop running, but knew I could keep going, and had to believe in myself enough to keep going. The last mile was the hardest, my legs felt heavy and tired. I said a little prayer in my heart as I ran that last mile, and when I crossed the finish line I thought of the scripture “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13). Not just in this half marathon, but in life in general, I couldn’t be half the person I am without Christ. He is my strength and my rock. He gives me hope, he believes in me and loves me when I don’t myself. We can see and feel Christ’s support when we let him into our lives and choose to look for him. This half marathon may have been easy for someone else, but running has always challenged me. I set a goal, I worked for it, and I did it. YOU can do hard things. YOU are strong and capable. Believe in yourself the way God believes in you, let him help you! YOU are awesome.
