Scientists Discover Why Flatworms are ‘Immortal’⁣ ⁣ Planarian flatworms regenerate their entire bodies using signals from distant intestinal cells, challenging the long-held belief that stem cells are regulated only by their immediate neighbors. This discovery reveals a complex network of long-range cellular communication that could transform regenerative medicine approaches.⁣ ⁣ Source Article: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2025/10/251029100156.htm⁣ ⁣ #regenerativemedicine #stemcells #biology #discovery #explore #explorepage

Some animals literally don't need their heads to survive. Cockroaches can live for weeks headless because they breathe through spiracles (tiny holes) across their body—no brain required for that function. But flatworms? They're on another level entirely. Cut off a flatworm's head and its body doesn't just survive, it regenerates a completely new one, including a brand new brain and mouth. Planarian are tiny flatworms that may look simple, but they possess one of the most extraordinary abilities in the animal kingdom. If a planarian is cut in half — or even into multiple small fragments — each piece can regenerate into a completely new worm. Within time, the fragment rebuilds everything: a head, tail, brain, and eyes. Even more surprising, experiments suggest these worms can retain certain learned behaviors after decapitation. When a new head grows back, the regenerated worm sometimes remembers tasks the previous head had already learned. Scientists believe this may happen because information is stored not only in the brain but also within cells throughout the body. This remarkable ability comes from specialized stem cells that can transform into any type of tissue needed to rebuild the organism. Because of this extreme regenerative power, planarians have become an important model for scientists studying healing, tissue regeneration, and cellular memory — offering clues about how living systems repair themselves. 🧬🪱

Video reposted from @ibrahim.elhariry 🔸🔸 Flatworms are very small, most of them between 10 – 50mm in length, and usually less than 1mm thick – making them extremely delicate. Being so flat they are very mobile and can squeeze into many crevices, making them hard to spot follow me for more videos and don’t forget to tag a friend who would love to see this 🫶🏼. #scubadiving #diving #scuba #underwater #underwaterphotography #padi #ocean #dive #scubadiver #uwphotography #underwaterworld #scubadive #sea #travel #photography #nature #marinelife #diver #scubalife #buceo #underwaterphoto #underwaterlife #uphoto #paditv #sealife #tauchen #divinglife #freediving #fish #oceanlife

Flatworms, specifically planarians, possess an extraordinary ability to regenerate their entire bodies from tiny fragments, sometimes as small as 1/279th of the original animal. This process is driven by a pool of adult pluripotent stem cells called neoblasts, which are distributed throughout the body and can create all new cell types. Within about a week, a severed piece can regenerate a complete, functioning worm. Research into these organisms is crucial for understanding stem cell behavior and developing regenerative medicine techniques, as it explains how organisms can maintain and regenerate body structures throughout their lives.

The surface of a neocaridina shrimp's exoskeleton hosts a dynamic microscopic ecosystem of organisms known as epibionts, which include peritrich ciliates and specialized flatworms. In a well maintained aquarium, this relationship is largely commensal or even mutualistic where these organisms use the shrimp as a mobile platform to filter-feed on suspended bacteria in the water column. Emerging research suggests that a stable, moderate population of these microbes might actually protect the shrimp by physically occupying space and outcompeting pathogenic fungal spores, such as Saprolegnia, preventing them from taking root. However, this delicate biological balance is dictated entirely by water quality. If dissolved organics, nitrates, or bacterial loads spike in the aquarium, epibiont populations can reproduce exponentially, transitioning from harmless hitchhikers into a suffocating burden that restricts the shrimp's joint articulation, obstructs oxygen exchange across the gills, and causes severe chronic stress. I believe that in order to manage these microscopic passengers, Neocaridina rely on ecdysis, or molting, as their primary physical defense mechanism. By periodically shedding their old cuticle, shrimp effectively discard their entire accumulated epibiont load, instantly resetting their external microbiome. The danger arises when a shrimp is severely weakened by poor water quality or an overwhelming epibiont infestation, so it may lack the energy to successfully complete this molt, which is almost universally fatal. For the dedicated aquarist, successfully keeping Neocaridina does not mean striving for a sterile, lifeless tank, but rather maintaining strict control over organic waste and observing the colony's molting behavior to ensure the environment always favors the shrimp's natural defenses. I am developing a complete guide on neocaridina containing info like that. www.impossibleaquariums.com for more aquarium ecology. Link in bio. #plantedtank #shrimptank #fishtank
