Discussion today: Puddle Jumpers & Flotation devices I’m not going to demonize or shame a parent for having them but if the goal is to keep your child safe in the water, ISR lessons or swim lessons in general are a lot more effective. If your child has been in flotation before it doesn’t mean they won’t learn how to swim, it just means they have some behaviors and habits to work through during lessons. Trust me when I say, students who have been in flotation before and then do ISR lessons gain so much confidence and want nothing to do with the puddle jumper anymore.

What to use instead ⤵️ I know it feels counterintuitive, but wearable flotation devices such as: ▫️ puddle jumpers ▫️ swimming vests ▫️ armband floaties actually INCREASE the risk of drowning. Here’s WHY 1️⃣ Little ones feel overly confident and think they can swim. 2️⃣ They keep children in the upright ‘drowning’ position. 3️⃣ They give parents a false sense of security, which means less active supervision. Looks okay—but did you know flotation devices lose buoyancy over time? 👀💦 📢PFDs (personal flotation devices) and lifejackets are two different devices.📢 Lifejackets are designed to turn an unconscious person face-up in the water. A PFD can’t do that—you can still drown in a PFD. PFDs are great for calm waters, kayaking, or supervised pool use. Most community center pools require non-swimmers to wear a PFD during leisure swim times. 🏊🏼‍♀️🫧🤿 Aim to replace your PFDs at least every 10 years. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it: Method 1: Over-the-Shoulder Method Remove Your Pants: Take off your pants while in the water. It might be easier to remove shoes and socks first. Tie the Legs: Knot the ends of the pant legs together tightly. Trap Air: Hold the waistband open and swing the pants over your head in a quick motion to trap air in the legs. Another method is to hold the waistband open and pull the pants under the water and then lift them out quickly to trap air inside. Seal the Waistband: Once air is trapped in the legs, quickly seal the waistband by folding it over or tying it if possible. Float Using the Pants: Place the knotted legs over your shoulders or behind your neck, with the inflated legs acting as flotation devices under your armpits or chest. The air trapped in the legs will help keep you afloat. Method 2: Waistband Inflation Method Remove Your Pants: Take off your pants as described above. Knot the Legs: Tie the ends of the legs together securely. Inflate the Pants: Swing Method: Hold the waistband and swing the pants above your head to catch air in the legs. Splash Method: Hold the waistband open and push it down into the water quickly, then pull it back up to trap air inside. At a minimum, you need to meet US Coast Guard requirements for marine safety. Required safety equipment includes personal flotation devices like life jackets or other PFDs. Some boats must carry throwable flotation such as buoyant cushions, life preserver rings and horseshoe buoys. Boats must carry a sound producing device. Examples include horns and whistles. Regulations require most boats carry visual distress signals. These include aerial flares and handheld flares. For going offshore, we suggest SOLAS flares.
