This isn't a render or simulation - this is the natural autofluorescence of a Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus) chrysalis under a UV light! Even though it had only begun pupating days prior, many of the butterfly structures are already highlighted in fluorescence such as the wings and legs. To my surprise, the metallic markings don't really fluoresce, probably because of the structural shine and the carotenoid pigment responsible for the gold tint. This is one of four caterpillars I raised this year, though only one of two that made it to maturity. Many caterpillars are prey whether for birds or animals, and the Monarch despite notoriety for being toxic, is not immune. The leading predator in my experience is a parasitic fly which tragically isn't noticeable until the caterpillar is nearly full sized. All that said, when the migration and habitat of this amazing species is threatened, any that make it through to become butterflies is a very good thing and I'm happy my garden was able to provide some necessary habitat despite being deeply embedded in the suburbs! #monarchbutterfly #xercessociety #conservation #uvivf #fluorescence #entomology #movingcolors #butterflies #chrysalis #shinypokemon #metapod

Think of it as a "cool" light—it releases very little heat because the energy is converted directly into photons. How It Works The process generally follows this path: Reaction: Two or more chemicals react to form a highly unstable, "excited" intermediate. Decay: The intermediate cannot stay in that high-energy state for long. Emission: As the intermediate returns to its ground state, it releases the excess energy as light. A classic example is the reaction of Luminol (C_8H_7N_3O_2) with an oxidizing agent. Laser Fluorescence in Calcite: this unique natural calcite specimen demonstrates strong fluorescence not only under UV but under longer wavelengths too. A high intensity 532nm green laser produces bright orange, a 445nm blue laser produces yellow light, and a near UV 405nm laser creates a pale whitish glow. The colorful glows comes from complex quantum mechanical behavior where photons are absorbed by trace amounts of Mn²⁺ (manganese in +2 ionic state) that take the place of calcium in the CaCO₃ lattice. Happens most commonly in natural stones but can occur in lab diamonds—often times colored ones since the same trace elements that make them colored also can cause fluorescence. Since blue cancels out yellow, it can even make diamonds look like a higher color grade than they are. #fluorescence #diamonds

Chemiluminescence is a process where a chemical reaction produces light. Chemiluminescence is different from fluorescence or phosphorescence because the glowing happens due to a chemical reaction, not from absorbing light. In chemiluminescence, a chemical reaction creates the excited state that produces light. This is the opposite of photochemical reactions, where light is used to power a chemical reaction. In chemiluminescence, light is made by releasing energy from a chemical reaction.
