Researchers at Eon Systems PBC have demonstrated a simulation where a digital fly body is controlled by a brain model built from real biological wiring. The brain model, published in Nature by Philip Shiu and colleagues, contains 125,000+ neurons and about 50 million synapses derived from the FlyWire map of the fruit fly brain. By connecting this model to the NeuroMechFly body in a physics engine, sensory signals can enter the brain simulation and produce movement in the virtual body. This creates a full perception-to-action loop, allowing behaviors like walking and grooming to emerge from the brain’s neural circuits. This isn’t just a digital insect. It has a full brain. Researchers at Eon Systems recreated the entire brain of a fruit fly using the FlyWire connectome, one of the most detailed brain maps ever built. The simulation contains 125,000 neurons and about 50 million synapses. But the important part is what happens next. The brain isn’t isolated. It’s connected to a simulated body inside the physics engine MuJoCo. That closes the sensorimotor loop. Meaning the digital fly can sense the environment, process signals through its neural network, and produce actions. Walking. Grooming. Feeding. No training. No reinforcement learning. Just biological wiring doing what it evolved to do. In validation tests, the model predicted motor behavior with roughly 95 percent accuracy. This is a different direction from typical AI development. Instead of training huge models with massive datasets, researchers are asking a simpler question. What if we just replicate the brain itself? A fruit fly brain is small. But the next step could be larger animals. A mouse brain has roughly 70 million neurons. Still tiny compared to humans, but massively more complex than a fly. The experiment also highlights something AI researchers keep running into. Biological brains run on about 20 watts of power. Modern AI training can require entire data centers. Which raises an interesting possibility. The future of intelligence might not come from bigger models. In September 2016, scientists launched the FlyWire Project to map the entire brain of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Using ultra-high-resolution electron microscopes, researchers captured millions of brain images by March 2020, but the massive data volume and neuron-segmentation errors slowed progress. By June 2022, AI-assisted tools and global researcher collaboration improved neuron detection accuracy. Finally, in October 2023, scientists published the complete connectome containing about 140,000 neurons and 50 million synapses, allowing the brain to be simulated inside a computer. In a historic leap for neuroscience and whole-brain emulation, an international consortium led by Princeton University successfully mapped the first complete wiring diagram of an adult fruit fly brain in October 2024. This massive 10-year project, known as FlyWire, used AI and electron microscopy to trace 139,255 neurons and 50 million synaptic connections across 100 terabytes of data. While the initial map was a static "atlas," subsequent research by scientists at UC Berkeley and the startup Eon Systems took the next step by simulating this neural circuit inside a computer to predict biological behaviors with startling accuracy. By early March 2026, Eon Systems demonstrated what many are calling the first true "embodied" brain upload by connecting the digital fly brain to a physics-simulated body. In the simulation, the "cyber fly" began to spontaneously walk, groom its antennae, and seek out food without any pre-programmed code or traditional AI training. Researchers believe this proves that complex biological behaviors emerge naturally from the physical structure of the brain's wiring rather than software logic. While the human brain is nearly a million times more complex, this breakthrough provides the first working blueprint for the long-debated concept of digital immortality.
