You are lifting heavy in the gym, but in activities like pickleball, tennis and basketball how quickly you can call upon that strength is key. I use the @hawkindynamics force plates to measure rate of force development along with symmetry between side and jump height just to name a few metrics it can measure. This truly allows me to look under the hood of my athletes. Many people are working on strength in the gym with heavy weights. It is also important to add in plyometric activities such as jumps to improve the rate of force development. You can’t jump slow!

Simply put - the capacity to withstand tons of sudden force and reflexively swing your legs underneath you trumps the ability to perform a movement that is 10x more removed from a real world (threat inducing) scenario If we’re talking purely GPP and capacity driven - attribute centric training then effective strength training is still an asset to being functional That’s not what I’m referring to though The reality is most people existing under the functional training umbrella employ modalities that strip all meaningful inputs from the training process What’s left is a superficial representation of open world movement that mimics with stunning imprecision the self organizing nature of movement You can’t mimic it but you can train attributes found within it

Part 2 from Vic’s session — power + plyometrics ⚡️ This session was about fast stretch-shortening cycle work and explosive power 💥 We use hurdle jumps to train elastic recoil - this means Vic has to produce force quickly. Improving things such as RFD ⬆️ 
Power cleans from blocks, trap bar jumps and broad jumps also train rapid force production and triple extension. Before an athlete reaches…… a task-specific coordination threshold, accuracy demands impose an error-avoidance cost that limits force and velocity expression in complex lifts. Once that threshold is met, simpler and more stable exercises allow greater output expression by removing accuracy constraints, while complex movements shift to a maintenance or supporting role rather than being primary output drivers. In other words you can’t expect the same adaptation from a single leg squat that you can from leg press in a athlete with a low training age. Nothing is sport specific about valuing stability, coordination, and accuracy, over force production.
