CAThe @foundlingmuseum showcases a tragic part of history: the foundling lottery. The Foundling Hospital was opened in 1742. Applications by mothers for their children quickly outnumbered the amount of available spaces, so a lottery system was introduced. Mothers would draw colored balls from a bag, white for acceptance, red for a waiting list—should a child be rejected for illness, a spot would open to a child on the waitlist—and a black ball for a rejection.
In 1756, the English government provided a grant to the hospital so they could afford to take on children without the need for a lottery system.

🌱Ormanda kendi kendine huzurlu bir hayat süren bir kirpi bir gün evinde temizlik yaparken biraz sorunlu bir minik örümcek yavrusuyla karşılaşır. Ona her türlü desteği ve ilgiyi gösterir ama bu minik ve sevimli örümcek hiç rahat durmuyor sürekli sorun çıkartıyordur. Kirpi sabırla onu eğitip hayatı normal seyrinde sürdürmeye çalışsa da minik örümcek kendisini tehlikeye sokacak, kirpinin de huzurunu kaçıracak şeyler yapmaya devam eder. Kirpi bir gün onu ormandaki sahipsiz hayvanların kaldığı bir eve götürüp bırakmaya karar verir, böylece eski sessiz sakin günlerine döner. Ama bu sefer de bir süre sonra onu yine özlediğini anlar.
🌱Bu 10 dakikalık sakin ve pastel renklerle oluşturulmuş diyalogsuz kısa animasyon bize arkadaşlıklar arasındaki sabır ve dostluk ilişkisini anlatıyor. TH💔 She wasn’t his mother, but she gave her life for him.
In 1764, Elizabeth Lewis worked as a wet nurse for The Foundling Hospital in London caring for a baby boy named George St John.
When George fell ill, Elizabeth stayed by his side until he passed.
Soon after, she developed the same symptoms.
The Foundling Hospital, ahead of its time in many ways, tried to bring her to London for medical care. But Elizabeth was too sick to move, and doctors were sent to her instead.
Her story survives only because the Hospital kept meticulous records which give us a rare glimpse into the women who literally gave everything to nurture foundling babies.
These small fragments of history remind us that the care, devotion, and risk surrounding motherhood have deep roots and that the system we know today was built on stories like Elizabeth’s.

FAIt’s amazing to think that I could be staring at the face of my biological 2nd great-grandfather, a man who was erased from our family history when my great-grandpa was given up as a foundling at birth in 1894.
Though this man is the current strongest candidate for his biological father, the only other possible relationship would be if he was instead the brother of the biological mother (another thread I’m following).
Either way, it’s incredible to uncover the photo of someone from my family that comes from this mysterious branch that was forgotten over a century ago.
