"I’ll never forget how I felt after my very first shower after my very first birth. With my first born, I literally was crying in the shower, because my body just felt so foreign and I wasn’t aware or sure how I was going to navigate through these changes that I wasn’t prepared to navigate through. One of my favorite pieces of advice I can give to first time Moms is to prepare for postpartum, and to prepare for the fourth trimester.. This is such a raw and vulnerable stage that you will be in. So to anyone finding themselves here right now. I’m sending you so much love your way as you embrace yourself in this period." 1️⃣ The first 6–8 weeks are critical for you BOTH This period — often called the fourth trimester — is when your baby’s body is rapidly developing and your own healing, hormones, lactation, and emotional regulation are all in flux. WHO and global health organizations emphasize quality care and close contact in these early weeks to support attachment, feeding, and recovery. 2️⃣ Newborns are still building immune defenses Babies’ immune systems are immature for the first weeks. Staying mostly home with trusted adults reduces exposure to a load of new germs clients aren’t vaccinated against yet — especially in crowded indoor spaces. (This isn’t panic, it’s protecting their developing immunity.) 3️⃣ It helped me establish breastfeeding & cues Limiting outings meant more predictable feeding windows, better latch, and fewer external distractions. Many lactation consultants recommend focused time at home to troubleshoot early challenges and build confidence. 4️⃣ You need protected healing time Your body just did something major. Whether you had stitches, a cesarean, or a straightforward birth — healing takes time. Early rest isn’t laziness, it’s essential recovery that supports mood, bonding, and long‑term well‑being. 5️⃣ Less hustle, more attachment Close contact builds secure attachment, supports sleep regulation, and strengthens your stress‑buffering system — for both of you. Quality of presence > quantity of places. ⸻ 👉 Controversial but honest: Some will say “get out and live life” — and that’s valid for their rhythm. But choosing calm, quiet, home‑focused early weeks doesn’t make you overprotective — it makes you strategic and baby‑centered. 💛 Agree? Disagree? Double tap if you have been ever confused about your child’s sleepy and hunger cues! As a pediatrician and a mom, I’ve been there many times. One minute you’re debating if they’re hungry and the next minute, your newborn is wailing like there’s no tomorrow. I recently became a mom of two and know this is a struggle, so I decided to host a virtual Newborn Sleeping Workshop to help the PedsDocTalk community. Mark your calendars for October 24th from 8pm-10pm EST and stay tuned for more information! Navigating the fourth trimester means deciphering your newborn’s cries and understanding their unique cues. Mastering these cues is the key to navigating those early months; but can sometimes be hard. Look out for early hunger signs: ⤵️ 😋 licking and smacking lips 👅 sticking out their tongue 🍼 rooting towards a finger or feeding source If they seem overly hungry soon after a feed, try comforting them with a gentle swaddle or cuddles. It’s essential to determine if they’re truly hungry or just seeking solace. Hands to mouth is usually a hunger cue under 8 weeks, but after 8 weeks this may indicate they want to be soothed. Look out for early sleepiness signs: ⤵️ 🤨 red eyebrows 😶 blank stares 😵‍💫 appearing dazed These signs indicate they’re ready for a nap. If they’re yawning or rubbing their eyes, sleep is approaching. However, when they’re overtly tired, they might cry. Remember, whether they’re extremely hungry or tired, the first step is to calm them. A soothed baby is more receptive to feeding or sleeping! Want more insights on these crucial cues? Drop a “newborn cues” comment below, and I’ll share my detailed handout with you! 💤🍼 What has helped you recognize your newborn’s hunger and sleepy cues? ⬇️

Supporting your partner through the fourth trimester can make all the difference for the two of you and your baby 🤍 Here are five meaningful ways you can help in these early weeks: 1️⃣ Make sure you and your partner get proper nutrition and hydration, which are important for recovery and energy levels. 2️⃣ While one partner takes the lead on baby duties, the other can rest and recharge. This helps prevent burnout and ensures that both parents can be fully present for their little one. 3️⃣ A gentle postpartum massage or bath can relieve muscle tension and promote relaxation, supporting emotional well-being during this transition. 4️⃣ Keeping your environment tidy and peaceful can significantly reduce stress levels and allow for more quality time together as a family. 5️⃣ Just being there to listen and validate your partner’s feelings can create a supportive atmosphere, strengthening your bond as partners and parents. A baby sleeping on a mother’s chest isn’t a habit… it’s biology. Heartbeats, warmth, breath, and skin regulate a newborn’s body, calm their nervous system, strengthen immunity, and build the foundation for secure attachment. 🫶 Across nature, infants survive by staying close. For humans, this chest-to-chest contact completes the “fourth trimester,” helping babies finish developing outside the womb, exactly as evolution designed. They won’t always fit on your chest. So slow down and take it all in. It’s doing more for you and them than you realize. 💕

The Fourth Trimester: Life Outside the Womb A transition guide 🤍 Your baby didn’t arrive “ready”. They arrived expecting the womb. The fourth trimester isn’t about schedules, sleep training or “getting back to normal.” It’s about finishing the pregnancy on the outside. For your baby: • Your arms replace the womb • Your heartbeat regulates their nervous system • Your presence is their safety For you: • Rest isn’t optional, it’s biological repair • Emotional fragility isn’t weakness, it’s neurological recalibration • You are not meant to “bounce back” you are meant to bond forward This season asks for slowness, softness and support. When we honour the fourth trimester, we reduce overwhelm, feeding stress, anxiety and burnout, for both of you. This isn’t indulgence. It’s foundational. Save this. Share it with a new mum. Because how we support the beginning shapes everything that comes after.. You think choosing a glider is all about the baby. As a second time mom, you realize the things that are most important in the first couple of months with a newborn. We decided to keep the new baby’s room as a recovery suite and one thing that was an absolute must for the room is a glider for those long nights breastfeeding and postpartum recovery. After extensively doing my research on power gliders after making the mistake of getting a manual one from a different brand for my first baby, the one chair that had consistently positive reviews was The Wingback from Nurture &. Let me tell you there is a HUGE difference. The Wingback has been a life saver during my “fourth trimester” with its power reclining, plug in usb port, smooth glide and lumbar support. It’s also spacious and non toxic with stain resistant fabric.I did not account for the huge toll recovery would take on my body and let me just say this glider has helped me recover all the while allowing me to spend precious bonding time with my new baby.
