You can add this undertaking to the list of things that have made me question my husband’s sanity but you can also add it to the list of things he’s proved to be a worthwhile venture. 🫡🧑🏼🌾
For weeks, Dan would volunteer to make the grocery run and every week he’d come back with a new exotic fruit for us to try — passion fruit, horn melons, dragon fruit, guava, lychee, starfruit & other tropical fruits we’re more familiar with like kiwi, papaya, mangoes, pomegranates, avocados & pineapples.🥭🍌🥝🌿🥑🍍
After having our share & delighting the taste buds, he saved as many seeds as he could find and took the time to sprout each one - separating the seeds from the flesh, soaking, drying or sometimes peeling them if need be.
He made ‘mini greenhouses’ out of leftover lettuce containers to plant the seeds in and within no time at all, they sprouted. 🌱🌵
Most of the tropical seedlings grew fast and quickly took over the space we had in our grow tent. After one year of growth, it feels like the tropics have come north & I’d say his mission was accomplished: turning store-bought into self-sustained… a mini tropical food forest, right here at home.

FAGrowing more Onions from Seed 🌱🧅 this year and here’s how you can too!
Starting onions from seed takes patience, but it’s worth it for a strong, healthy crop! Here’s how to do it:
1️⃣ Start Indoors Early – Onion seeds need a head start! Plant them indoors 8–10 weeks before your last frost date. Use a shallow tray with well-draining soil and keep them in a warm, sunny spot.
2️⃣ Keep Them Moist – Onions like consistent moisture, but not soggy soil. Water gently to keep the soil damp.
3️⃣ Give Them a Trim – Once your seedlings reach about 5–6 inches tall, snip them back to 3 inches with scissors. This keeps them from getting tangled, encourages strong root growth, and makes for thicker, healthier onions later on!
4️⃣ Harden Off & Transplant – About 4 weeks before your last frost, start taking your seedlings outside for a few hours each day to get them used to outdoor conditions. Once they’re strong enough, plant them in your garden, spacing them about 4 inches apart.
5️⃣ Watch Them Grow! – Keep your onions well-watered and weed-free. In a few months, you’ll have homegrown onions ready to harvest!

Gardening is actually so much easier than people make it seem. If you have good soil, water and sunlight, you can grow anything! Corn is one of our favorite things to grow! It’s incredible to watch how fast it grows! It goes from a seed to 8 feet tall in just a few months! My grandpa used to always talk about sleeping in the garden as a kid under the corn because it was nice and cool and the sound of the corn swaying in the wind was relaxing. I’ve never done that but maybe one day I will! Happy homesteading!
