FACES OF THE NIGHT… 🦇 Not all bats are built the same. Some look gentle… others look like something out of a nightmare. Look closer. The fruit bat carries soft eyes and a fox-like face, designed for finding ripe fruit in the dark. The vampire bat has heat sensors on its nose, allowing it to locate blood flow under skin with surgical precision. Then it gets stranger. Horseshoe bats shape sound with their nose like a living radar system. Leaf-nosed bats turn their faces into complex sonar reflectors. Long-eared bats listen to insects moving in complete silence. And then… the hammer-headed bat. A face so exaggerated it looks unreal. That massive structure is used to amplify sound during mating calls, turning the night into a battlefield of echoes.

They are among the largest bats in the world, with wingspans that can exceed five feet. Despite their name, they are not related to foxes but get their nickname from their canine-like faces and large eyes. These bats rely on strong eyesight rather than echolocation to navigate, which sets them apart from many other bat species. Flying foxes play a crucial ecological role as pollinators and seed dispersers. As they feed on nectar, pollen, and fruit, they carry pollen from one plant to another and help spread seeds across wide areas. This sweet short tailed fruit bat was placed in the clinic hut for a short observation (around 30 minutes or so) after taking a tumble during flight. Even though their enclosure floor is padded, sometimes the bats take a hard landing after a midair collision or accidentally falling. She was released back into the general population after it was determined she had no injuries.
