Do you know what this is?! 🧐 . . It’s called FUNKITE! . What it is: Funkite is literally layered paint! Paint originally applied and built up for use by the Grateful Dead, such as on equipment or scenic elements. Over time, these layers cured and can now be cut and polished much like Fordite to create unique, colorful cabochons and artistic pieces.

🤩😯😱 Slicin’ up some FUNKY earring pairs! 🩷💙🩵🖤🤍🤩 I’m SO excited to have picked up a little bit of this RARE material. As a lapidary artist, I’m always on the hunt to work with new rough. I finally was able to score a little bit of this groovy piece of American History called FUNKITE! So from what I’ve found out about this material, Funkite is a vintage paint overspray material from the 60’s-70’s. This one particular company sprayed landscaping & stage props in a pour pit. The paint used in their products were composed of UV reactive pigments which light up under UV lighting. Supposedly they worked on props for Grateful Dead concerts & various trade shows. So this material is the overspray which hardened and built up over time similar to Fordite. There’s not a lot of this rough around, but I managed to score these two pieces to play with. And not sure what the real story on this material is, but whatever the case it is very cool stuff! I would call it vintage since it's from the late 60's and 70's. It's from a paint company that closed, I believe in the late 70's. This company painted props, stages for the GD 🤟 and other hippie festivals back in the day. They used florescence in the paint! Sometimes we even find little pieces of quartz mixed in! The paint is collected and cut, and can be displayed as-is or stabilized and made into cabachons and jewelry.
