CO🎯 How to land a research position in high school as a premed (step-by-step):
Step 1: Pick a nearby university.
Start with a public or state university close to you. Don’t aim for Ivy League professors — even their own students struggle to get research spots. Local schools are way more open to high school outreach.
Step 2: Find the faculty directory.
Search “[University Name] faculty directory biology” or “[University Name] research labs.” Look for professors doing anything in biology, chemistry, neuroscience, public health, psychology, or medical science.
Step 3: Make a list of 30–50 professors.
Read their bios and recent papers. Take notes on the ones doing work you actually find interesting — even if you don’t understand it all yet.
Step 4: Write a personalized cold email.
No copy-paste templates. Mention a paper they wrote and say what stood out to you. Then connect it to something personal — like a class, a topic you loved, or a family experience.
Step 5: Keep it short.
Your email should be no more than 8 sentences. Be respectful of their time. Say you’re a high school student excited to learn, willing to help with anything, and attach your resume (even if it’s simple).
Step 6: Follow up.
If they don’t respond in a week or two, follow up once. Be polite. Professors are busy and sometimes just miss the first message.
