There is no place like Bass Rock - it’s one of my favourite places on our precious planet. Home to thousands of northern gannets, the moment you step foot on this small island is like stepping back in time - the smell, the noise, the chaos.... it’s electrifying! This trip was the perfect place to try out my new Canon EOS R7 and RF-S 18-150mm lens - and I loved every second of it. When I’m filming or taking photos, I genuinely forget that anything else exists except for the wildlife and the camera. This is my first mirrorless camera and the dual pixel CMOS autofocus is a game changer - tracking animal eyes as they move across the frame, making sure my images are sharp. It made life SO much easier - who’d have thought?! The combined lens and body image stabiliser was also fantastic. Gannets are known for diving into the sea from heights of 30m at speeds of up to 60mph! It’s great to finally have a camera that can keep up - thank you @canonuk! I can film in 4K, connect to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and even stream to YouTube too. Hope you’re all well, and spending lots of time outside getting stuck into nature. It’s that time of year when the Tilting sheep leave their barn to go graze and roam free on Little Fogo Islands, a nearby cluster of islands that is no longer inhabited by human residents. Around the island, seabirds such as puffins, gannets and turres are abundant, but predators are scarce. To reach their vacation destination, the flock and their farmers need to take a boat ride. Once the sheep are safely dropped off, the farmers will return a few times over the summer to check up on them. But otherwise the sheep and their lambs will enjoy peace and freedom until the weather gets colder. Some time in the fall, on a day when the ocean is calm, they’ll hop back into the boat and make their way home to Tilting. Among them are puffins and gannets, two of the island’s most iconic species: both are generally monogamous and often reunite with the same partner and nesting site each year. As part of their bonding rituals, they gently rub their beaks together, a behaviour known as “billing”. ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Puffins can be seen carrying grass and seaweed to line “their” burrows (actually, the burrows are actually “borrowed” from the rabbits), while gannets gather in dense colonies on the cliff ledges, filling the air with sound and motion. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s a short but intense season, full of activity, noise, and fascinating behaviours, that mark the start of a new chapter with these dramatic cliffs as backdrop. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #nossisland #shetlandislands #promoteshetland #puffins #nestingseason #gannets

Getting the reps in 💪🏽 I spent a whole day photographing the locals at the Miriam Gannet Colony in New Zealand in January. I think I ended up taking over 3000 photos in one day while practicing my photography of birds in flight. I probably edited about 30 images, and these are some of my favourite vertical shots!
