As a pediatric eye surgeon, I get asked about this constantly: “How did my baby get these eyes?!” especially when it doesn’t seem to “match” the parents. Here’s why this happens: 1️⃣ The 16-Gene Symphony. We used to think eye color was simple math. It’s actually at least 16 different genes working together. You can “carry” the instructions for light eyes for decades until the right “Master Switch” (the HERC2 gene) flips them on. 2️⃣ Rayleigh Scattering. It’s the same physics that makes the sky look blue—light hitting the structure of the eye and bouncing back to our cameras. 3️⃣There is actually no green pigment. Green is the result of a tiny bit of brown melanin mixing with a yellow pigment called lipochrome. What color eyes do your kids have? Or did your eye color skip a generation? #greeneyes

Scientists comparing full genomes have found that human and gorilla DNA differs by only about 1.6% in many gene regions, meaning the vast majority of our genetic code is shared. In practical terms, studies often summarize this as roughly 98% genetic similarity between the two species. Both humans and gorillas belong to the great ape family and evolved from a common ancestor that lived millions of years ago in Africa. Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives — but gorillas are next in line. What makes this even more fascinating is genomic complexity: About 15% of the human genome is actually closer to gorillas than to chimpanzees, showing how intertwined our evolutionary history really is. This is why the similarities go far beyond DNA percentages. Humans and gorillas share: Similar skeletal structures Comparable hand and foot anatomy Complex social behaviors Advanced emotional expression Evolution didn’t draw a clean line between “us” and “them.” It drew a branching tree.
