Wrong permissions on ~/.ssh can break login. 4️⃣ Server-side config checks The server reads sshd_config. Settings like allowed users, auth methods, and timeouts apply here. 5️⃣ Shell startup Only after all checks pass, you actually get a shell. That’s why SSH slowness is rarely “just network”.
