DE🦷 Gingival Margin Trimmer (GMT) – The finisher’s touch!
Description
• A modified form of enamel hatchet with the blade curved and the cutting edge angled (not at 90° like a hatchet).
• Available in pairs (right & left cutting) for use on mesial and distal margins.
• Has 2 main types: Mesial GMT & Distal GMT (depending on the cutting edge angle).

Uses of GMT
1. Refining Gingival Seat – smoothens and flattens the gingival floor in Class II cavities.
2. Trimming Gingival Margin – removes unsupported enamel rods at the gingival cavosurface.
3. Creating a Proper Cavosurface Angle – ensures butt joint margin (for amalgam) or beveling (for composite).
4. Smoothing Internal Line Angles – reduces stress concentration and helps in proper restoration adaptation.
5. Beveling (Composite prep) – on enamel margins to improve bonding.
6. Refinement – makes the gingival seat smooth and even, preventing marginal leakage or overhangs.

Clinical Uses
• Class II Amalgam Cavity:
• Used to remove unsupported enamel rods at the gingival margin.
• Helps create a flat gingival seat with a 90° cavosurface angle.
• Class II Composite Cavity:
• Used to bevel the gingival margin (if enamel is present).
• Improves retention and marginal seal.
• General Finishing:
• Used to refine margins where rotary instruments might leave irregularities.

Always match the GMT type with the cavity location:
• Mesial GMT for mesial box.
