Sometimes random results are the best. ✨ I love glazing, but I don’t like the preparation of the glazes at all🙈 So sometimes I have to take a step back, because always opening dozens of glaze jars is not always realistic in one glazing session 😅. This is why I try to work with what I have and the results are often surprising. This dip-dry-brush glazing method is my favourite and actually makes me enjoy glazing 🫣 This method lowers my commercial glaze costs and provides my favourite results. I’m fortunate to have access to a bunch of lovely dipping glazes at my studio, so this workflow just works really well for me. I know some of you home potters won’t have access to dipping glazes, so I apologize in advance 🥲 NOTES: You need to let the dipping glaze dry for 12+ hours AND clean up any drips or tong marks before brushing on for best results. I’ve learned there is extra risk with this method. The gum additives in dipping glazes can react negatively with brush on glazes. I have tested this method with 6 dipping glazes and 7 brush on glazes and have had nice results every time. Still, please proceed with caution. These dip/brush glaze combos should NOT be considered food-safe as they have not been lab-tested. Use a single glaze inside and only experiment on the outside if you want to guarantee food-safety. #pottery #ceramics #glazingpottery #glazingtutorial #colourfulceramics

🇬🇧 Glazing in layers — when gravity becomes part of the design Today we’re glazing a cup using a complex, multi-layered combination. This kind of glazing works especially beautifully on vertical forms — the glazes flow, meet each other, and create soft, unpredictable transitions. Our heroes today: • Amaco PC-16 Purple Crystal • Amaco PG-42 Teal Drift • Amaco C-10 Snow • Botz Plus 9020 (for extra flow) Process: 1. Start with PC-16 Purple Crystal on the lower part of the cup (about 1/3). This semi-matte glaze works as a base and prevents other glazes from running too far down. → 3 layers 2. Create soft waves with PG-42 Teal Drift inside and outside, leaving some space for the next glaze. → 3 layers 3. Fill the empty areas with C-10 Snow. → 3 layers 4. Finish with Botz Plus 9020 on the white areas, closer to the upper half of the cup. → 1 thick layer Let the glaze flow. Let go of control. Enjoy the transitions. → 3 vrstvy 2. Vytvoříme vlny pomocí PG-42 Teal Drift zvenku i zevnitř, necháme místo pro další glazuru. → 3 vrstvy 3. Volná místa vyplníme C-10 Snow. → 3 vrstvy 4. Na bílé části, blíže k horní polovině, naneseme Botz Plus 9020. → 1 silná vrstva Nechte glazuru téct. Výsledek vzniká v pohybu.

Lately I’ve been deep in manual kiln programming mode 🔥 Not because something was wrong with my clay or glazes — but because the kiln needed a bit more conversation. These were the issues I ran into, what was actually happening, and how manual programming helped in my case 👇. Save for when you next have fitting issues. 1. Bloating This one showed up in the glaze firing, even though the problem started way earlier. Gases hadn’t fully escaped during the bisque, so they waited… then expanded later 😬 My fix was a manual hold in the bisque — around 900–950°C — for 20–30 minutes. That extra time lets organic material and sulphur burn off properly before glaze ever touches the pot. 2. Cloudy / under-developed glazes Nothing “wrong” with the glaze — it just wasn’t getting enough time to fully melt and mature. I added a short soak at peak temperature (1220°C) for 10–20 minutes, which gave the glaze time to level out, clear, and actually finish melting. 3. Pinholing (the surprise one) I’d never had pinholing with this glaze before… until I was firing in freezing outside temperatures ❄️ The kiln was losing heat faster, the climb wasn’t as even, and gases didn’t have time to smooth out at the surface. I slowed the final ramp and added a top-temp soak, then a slightly slower cool through ~1100–1000°C, which helped the glaze heal before it set. #handmadeceramics #potterylove #kilnfiring These aren’t the only solutions — but after a lot of reading, testing, and a few nerve-wracking kiln openings… they turned out to be mine.

Let me explain these: 1. Pre dipping the tongs makes it a little easier to clean up the marks they leave - it doesn’t prevent them it just makes it a bit easier. It works better with some glazes than others. 2. Count or time the dip so that you can repeat the results or adjust them or at the very least so that what you do is informed by your previous test tiles or pots. 3. Waxing the bottoms - not everyone loves this, you don’t have to do it, you can just use a sponge - I do it because I like the cleanness of the lines and the sponging is quicker. 4. Shaking off the drips means you get a cleaner finish on the final glaze - especially important if you’re going to layer another glaze over the top. 5. I didn’t do it in this video because I was filming it but if you put the pot down as quickly as possible after you’ve glazed it the tong marks are less of an issue because the glaze still has time to move into the gaps. Bonus tip: big sponges are better than little sponges. #pottery #ceramics #tips

You can put glazes into a bisque firing, and if the temperature is suitable for that glaze, it will behave a lot like bisque firing clay. The glaze will fuse into a solid lump but won't melt and stick to everything around it, allowing you to make colourful glaze speckles which can be added back into another glaze without falling apart. For a long time, pottery felt like a very expensive hobby for me. I was buying clay, glazes, tools, paying for firings and markets, and wondering why nothing ever seemed to add up. These are a few things I wish someone had told me earlier 👇 ✨ Making lovely pots isn’t the same as making a living Being good at pottery doesn’t automatically mean the numbers will work. That doesn’t mean you’re failing — it just means there’s another side to learn. ✨ Selling out doesn’t always equal “doing well” If you’re exhausted and still not earning much, something in the background probably needs adjusting. ✨ People need help understanding your work Most customers don’t know about clay, glazes, or process. They buy when they understand the story and why your work is special. ✨ Pottery gets easier when you simplify things Clear collections, repeatable pieces, and gentle routines make the whole thing feel much less overwhelming. Pottery doesn’t have to stay something that drains your time, energy, and money. It can grow into something more sustainable, at a pace that suits you. That’s why I created From Passion to Profit — a course made by a potter, for potters, to gently guide you through the business side. 👉 Comment P2P and I’ll send you the details.
