Do you know about 🔥🤌 *** The Gomira form is the traditional form with the characters of Bura-Buri (Old man- Old woman), Smasan Kali, Masan Kali, Dakini Bishwal, SigniBishwal, Bagh (Tiger), Nar-Rakshas and Narsingha Avatar. The Ram-Vanvas form depicts the Van Kanda of Ramayana. Traditionally, the dance starts with the entry of two characters Buro-Buri, who are actually said to be the human forms of Shiva and Parvati. After their performance, other masked dancers enter their arena to perform. According to the Gomira tradition, these gods took human shape and descended on earth so that they may bless the humans and help them to fight the forces of evil and establish a righteous way of life. There are no vocal or oral parts in the dance. The performers dance to the beating of dhaks (a percussion instrument) and Kantar (cymbal like instrument). The dance does not have any specific movement or form, dancers just go with the flow creating their own movements. The masks worn by the dancers are quite heavy and they wear the masks in very suffocating conditions. The locals believe that while dancing, the gods enter the dancers and they are then able to dance in such oppressive conditions. The dancers who especially put on bigger masks often go into trance supplementing the beliefs of the villagers; they have to be restrained by sprinkling water from the Gomira Ghot. The villagers believe that the deities enter into the dancers during those moments.Infact, it is believed that when any dancer wearing the Narasingha mask is possessed, he can only be calmed by drinking human blood! So nowadays, a dance wearing the Narasingha mask is rarely performed. #gomira #documentaryfilm #northbengal #ruraldance #viral #shortfilm #explorepage #natgeoindia #betterindia #incredibleindia #shotoniphone @natgeoindia

Gomira Mukha Nritya is one of the most powerful and visually striking folk traditions of Bengal—deeply rooted in ritual, myth, and community life. About Gomira Mukha Nritya Gomira Mukha Nritya (also spelled Gamira) is a ritual mask dance traditionally performed in the Dinajpur region of North Bengal (Dakshin & Uttar Dinajpur). The word Gomira is believed to have originated from Gram-Chandi or Gomata, symbolising protective village deities. • 🎭 Handcrafted wooden masks represent gods, goddesses, demons, animals, and mythical beings • 🕉️ Performed to ward off evil spirits, diseases, and natural calamities • 🥁 Accompanied by intense dhak, kansa, and madol rhythms • 🌾 Closely associated with agrarian life and village rituals • 🔥 Movements are raw, energetic, and trance-like—blending devotion with drama This dance is usually performed during Chaitra Sankranti and other local festivals, where dancers invoke divine powers through masks, music, and motion. No GI tag. No national award. No global stage. Just generations of devotion — unrecognized. It's a pity that even many bengalis are not aware of this age old tradition, artistry and craftsmanship. I urge everybody to be united and 🎭 Let’s change that. 📣 Let Gomira be heard. 🖋️ Demand a GI Tag for the masks. 🏆 Recognition for the dance. 🌍 A space in the world’s and India's cultural heritage. Share your contents on Gomira more and more so that the authorities notice and think🥺 In the remote villages of Dinajpur, Bengal — gods are not just worshipped, they are worn. Through fierce wooden masks and trance-like steps, Gomira Nach tells stories older than memory. But today, this sacred folk tradition and the masterful craft of mask-making stand at the edge of oblivion. 🔖 #GIforGomira #RecognizeFolkArt #BengalFolk #SaveGomira #FolkHeritageMatters 🎥 #GomiraNach #MukhaNach #CulturalAppeal #FromDinajpurToTheWorld #GomiraDance #FolkReel #travel #journalism #incredibleindia #artistry #craftsmanship Should Gomira be awarded an GI tag for the mask and recognition for the dance

।।Bengal's living ritual: The Gomira Dance।। A long-lost tradition of Bengal that transcends mere performance, reflecting ancient mythological references and cohesive community spirit. The Gomira dance is one of the state’s oldest cultural expressions, deeply tied to rural belief systems. It is performed by villagers wearing large, brightly painted wooden masks depicting deities, demons, and mythological characters. The performance serves a spiritual purpose—to drive away evil forces and welcome divine blessings into the community. At the heart of this tradition are the masks themselves, carved by the skilled artisans of Kushmandi in South Dinajpur. Made from Gamari wood, these masks are striking in their colors—often red, blue, and white—and bring to life characters such as Mahishasura, Hanuman, and various gods and goddesses. The dance is both devotional and dramatic, performed solo or in groups, with dancers dressed in elaborate costumes to complement their masks. Traditionally, these performances take place during festivals, embodying the collective faith, heritage, and creativity of Bengal’s rural communities. #gomira #westbengaltourism #kolkata #nikonz6iii #india @thekolkatakaleidoscope @kolkatasutra @kolkataphotographers @kolkatas_paparazzi @kolkata_namashkar @thisiskolkata @in_kolkata @thekolkatabuzz @thekolkatabuzz @kolkataepicurean @kolkatagolpo @kolkatasutralifestyle @kolkatasillusion_official @kolkatar_ondormohol @westbengaltourism @westbengal_photographers @bengaltourismgov @kolkatarphotocafe @the_kolkata_mirror @the_kolkata_tripod

Gomira is not only an Art form , it’s a connection between the mask and the spirit of the Dancer . It’s a ritualistic dance that bridges the village communities to the divine. While there I was witnessing the dialogue between the past and the present . The weight of the mask swaying to the rhythm of the Dhak , providing a glimpse of sacred faces that have watched over these lands for generations . #gomira #iphonemovie #northbengal #westbengal #incredibleindia🇮🇳

Mukha or Gomira masks are traditional handcrafted masks used in the cultural and ritual practices of Bengal, originating from the Dinajpur district of West Bengal, India. These masks are deeply rooted in the local folklore, tribal customs, and religious traditions of the area.
