A Clinician Answers 👩‍⚕️ Manpreet @mannpmhnp responds to the question: “How do I deal with panic attacks, which make me miss my appointments?” Answer: The best way to stop a panic attack is to use breathing and grounding techniques to stay focused on the present. 🧘 Deep breathing - Do your preferred breathing exercise, or try inhaling for a count of 5 and exhaling for a count of 5. Repeat a few times. 👀 Grounding techniques - focus on something physical in your environment or your body. For example, tap your legs or wiggle your fingers and toes. You can also try the 5-4-3-2-1 coping technique: Name five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste. Some people have messaged me saying they feel a lot of shame bc they can’t feel anything. They keep trying to ‘trigger’ a feeling because they know how terrible things are but they feel ‘frozen’ or numb. Trust your nervous system. Trust your psyche. Feeling numb from distressing images is a natural response to protect you from further emotional distress. Our body/nervous system/psyche is a very sophisticated system. It will do what it has to do to ensure your survival. This feeling of numbness can be a form of disassociation or a coping mechanism when you being is feeling flooded, scared, or overwhelmed. It’s a ‘shutting down’ of emotional systems to protect you. **Give Yourself Time: Sometimes, you just need to allow yourself time to process what you’ve seen. It might not hit you right away, and that’s okay. **Limit Exposure: whenever possible, limit further exposure to distressing images, especially if you are vacillating from being numb to being angry. **Engage in grounding techniques: Grounding techniques can help bring you back to the present moment and out of your head. Some techniques include: ~5-4-3-2-1: Identify five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste (this doesn’t take a lot of time or effort so do this often throughout the day to anchor yourself in the here and now) ~Holding onto an object and focusing on its texture, temperature, and other physical qualities. Throwing on some music in the morning is one of the main ways I connect into my body and be in the present moment! Being in a body that feels regulated enough to connect to the present moment is one of the most important parts of wellness. Over the years it took a lot of tools and healing sessions to learn how to become safe in my own body. As Mental Health Month begins tomorrow, here are some of my favorite somatic tools for dropping into your body and the present moment: 1. Grounding Techniques: Grounding techniques help anchor you in the present moment and create a sense of safety. 2. Body Scanning: Body scanning involves systematically bringing attention to different parts of your body and noticing any sensations without judgment. This can help increase body awareness and presence. - Start at your feet and slowly move your attention upward, scanning each part of your body from toes to head. - Notice any tension, discomfort, or relaxation areas without trying to change them. - Take deep breaths and imagine sending relaxation to any tense areas. 3. Dancing: Throwing on some music and being present with the sound and how your body wants to move to it, with awareness of breath and bodily sensations. 4. Box breathing: breath in for four, hold for four breathe out for four, hold for four. It’s natural to experience anxiety and panic in response to dangerous or stressful situations, but panic attacks can sweep over us unexpectedly, often without a clear reason, leaving us feeling overwhelmed and distressed. Understanding why our brain reacts in this way enables us to gain a sense of control. Incorporating grounding techniques and other mental fitness tools can help to reduce the panic and calm us down. We have to get back into the spirit of ourselves to know that's the best line of defense when we’re experiencing hardships and pain. We’re in the age of Aquarius and this personal year 7 (2023) is causing friction within most of us because 7 is a spiritual number. It’s the unseen, the truth seeker, it’s reflective and questions things. So some of you may be dealing with internal issues more intensely this year. Or everything that has been suppressed in the past is coming to the surface. If you can find some grounding techniques that work for you to center yourself during times of stress or feeling off. • Meditation • Prayer • Journaling • Soothing Music • Exercise • Spending time in nature • Breath-work As the collective consciousness, the old paradigm is not working. We must adjust to a more internal way of being in these times. You can’t solve spiritual problems with physical solutions. Take a pause and get back to center. Do your best not to overdo or think in challenging moments. Be more present. All is well and will be well. So it is. You’re divinely protected. Know that and own that trust. #ItsMiracleSeason

Neuroscientist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor explains that when an emotion is triggered, the body’s physiological response (such as a rush of chemicals and neural activity) lasts about 90 seconds. This doesn’t mean emotions disappear after 90 seconds, but that we have a role in prolonging them. If we keep replaying a situation or reinforcing a belief about it, we keep the emotion alive. What helps is awareness. When you feel something intense, pause and name it..”I’m feeling anxious” or “I’m feeling frustrated.” Remind yourself that the physical sensation will pass if you don’t keep fueling it. Grounding techniques, deep breathing, or shifting your focus to something present can help your nervous system settle. The more you practice, the easier it gets to let emotions move through you instead of getting stuck in them. That said, if you’ve experienced trauma or are neurodivergent, this process works differently and may not be helpful for you. Trauma rewires the brain and nervous system, making emotional responses feel automatic and overwhelming. When a trigger activates a past trauma, your body may react as if the danger is happening all over again. In these moments, simply “letting the emotion pass” isn’t always possible because the nervous system is stuck in a survival response. It can also feel invalidating and create more stress to you. Healing from trauma involves more than awareness, it requires working with the nervous system through grounding, regulation techniques, and sometimes professional support to help the body and brain feel safe again. Neurodivergent brains may experience and process emotions differently. For instance, challenges with emotional regulation are common in ADHD, leading to emotions that may feel more intense or prolonged. Similarly, autistic individuals might experience heightened emotional sensitivity or delayed processing.
