The Ogeechee River is where many were captured and became prisoners of war… but Charleston is where multiple nations, languages, and cultures were forced together on one peninsula.
Indigenous tongues. African languages. English.
That mixture formed what we now call the Geechee Gullah accent.
It didn’t come from one place… it came from survival.

KAI’m of Gullah Geechee descent which means I’m apart of the African Diaspora….. we are all one blood! Gullah cuisine is very similar to West Indian cuisine…..a lot of one pot, seasonal and flavorful cooking! The roti was a little tedious but it wasn’t difficult for me to make Curried chicken roti at home…..it really came naturally!
I seasoned the chicken with green seasoning (fresh herbs), gram masala, all spice and all purpose seasoning. The key to making a GOOD curry is to “burn” the curry before adding your meat. Which means you have to bloom the curry in hot oil! I also added a little bullion to the pot for added flavor. So I let that slow cook with chickpeas and potatoes and then made my roti. I made a Guyanese style roti. I served the curry chicken and roti with rice (because I am Geechee 😂)……. My West Indian fam how did I do???
