A lot of you guys can do a handstand pushup… but can you do it with perfect form? As you can see, I can’t. But this is my cleanest so far! Why is handstand pushup so much harder with straight alignment? It’s the lean. To get a proper handstand push up, you have to lean out further in the handstand. That shifts more of your bodyweight onto your shoulders, which makes the press way harder and exposes any breakdown in your line. The more you lean, the harder it is to keep a straight back and stay stacked. That’s why a lot of reps look strong but aren’t actually perfectly clean. If you can hit one with good form, you’re doing something right and you will pass this challenge! So, can you do it? #handstandpushup #calisthenics #acolesthenics #dontquit #handstand

He says, “The handstand pushup (HSPU) is a an important strength skill, which I integrate into my practice on a regular basis as sort of pre-hab and conditioning. I usually do 2 or 3 sets of 5 repetitions, but sometimes I go for a slow single rep as demonstrated here.⁠ ⁠ I also find that doing this on a regular basis over the years helps in assessing my health and the strength of my shoulders. At times, when this becomes a little difficult or painful, it’s a great indicator that I need to give it extra attention until it becomes easy again.”⁠ ⁠ We’re not so sure about e a s y...⁠ We might just watch him this time, but who’s trying the HSPU on their PRO® mat today?! The benefits of having a practice. When you practice something, you’re actively trying to improve. You’re not “doing it,” “playing it,” or “perfecting it.” You are practicing. It may seem like a small detail, but the stories we tell ourselves about everything in life matter. They dictate how we see each part of our day and life. A story change I would recommend is to find a skill you want to learn. Handstand, cooking a perfect meal, weightlifting, running, etc. and focus your intention on practicing that skill and all of the micro-skills required for it. (Comment or dm the word practice and I’ll send you some other examples) The micro skills within each of these are seemingly endless, for example, with a handstand practice. - Practicing your kick up - Different shapes with your body - Head position - Time of holds - Hand placement - Entry into and out of HS I can go on and on… The key to making it work long-term and become enjoyable for you is finding the appropriate micro-skill challenge for your current level of proficiency. If it’s too difficult you will become frustrated and want to quit, if it’s too easy you will become bored. This video is my last rep of a 90-degree straddle handstand pushup, it requires all of my skill and strength, and as you can see it was a battle to finish the rep. The other benefit of an intentional practice is that you can see and feel improvement each time, (not always as much as you may like) but that positive feedback can become jet fuel for your motivation and consistency. Details: Handstand pushup is not necessary for handbalancing but it has its uses. Its much more a strength move than the stacked handstand work and it uses a shoulder position you rarely use otherwise when balancing. This breakdown shows a way you can learn the balancing aspect of it as well as the crucial parts where the shoulder position changes. First off you need to learn the lean to get into a diagonal position. This is done by keeping a straight body and shifting shoulders forwards. Make these leans small at first. Once you have control there you can begin to initiate the arm bend. The elbows should move backwards so you need to keep the arms from flaring out from the body. Trotzdem habe ich mir unterschiedlichen Band-Variationen viel Kraft aufgebaut und es ist einer meiner Lieblings-Übungen! Achtung nur; wenn du den Handstand noch nicht sicher halten kannst, je nach Band kannst du leicht umkippen. 🙈🙏 #calisthenics #handstandpushup #hspu #handstandpushups #handstands

After 10 years of bodybuilding I can say that I was the least functional person. Starting as a “noob” on this different type of training has humbled me for sure. The progress is super slow, but it’s starting to feel rewarding. A feeling I no longer got from just focussing on weights, building muscle and being the leanest guy in the room.
