Daydreaming my PhD degree was bitter sweet. On one hand I was enjoying the process of learning new things every day, getting inspired by brilliant scholars, getting to share my knowledge through my papers and teaching classes. On the other hand, I was terrified if I would make it to the end. In the last few years of my PhD journey things started to feel endless and I was doubting if I made the right choice to stay in academia. Leaving my non academic job to try transitioning fully to academia was the scariest decision I made in my life. I had no guarantee I would get a job, especially without the PhD degree. But the thought of regretting not trying was even bigger so I took that risk. And I am really glad I did it! There is no better feeling than waking up and realizing that what you have dreamed of has actually become true. If I ever struggle in academia or in life, I can confidently say that if I overcome PhD, I can do anything! I am so grateful to all the support I got from my family, friends and teachers who never doubted my potential. I cannot wait for what is to come next in my post PhD life! #graduation #phdgraduation #phd #phdlife #lifeinjapan #lifeintokyo #tokyojapan #studyinjapan #gradstudentlife #gradschoollife #academic #大人の勉強 #社会人の勉強

With 1 semester of grad school under our belts here’s what we have to share: 1. Physics PhDs are funded! 🤑 For the longest time both of us assumed grad school might not be worth the cost/we couldn’t afford it. But for physics & many other programs in the US, during your PhD you are essentially employed as a teaching assistant & a researcher, so your tuition fees are fully covered and you get paid a salary/stipend on top of that. You don’t pay, you get paid! 💸 2. Grad school admissions are really nothing like undergrad admissions…. Filling out grad apps might bring back some ✨unpleasant✨memories from applying to colleges as a high schooler. But it’s important to remember as you write your apps/get your results that the admissions process works VERY differently. Think of it more like getting hired for a job rather than getting admitted to a college. The availability, funding, and demand for different positions varies a lot from school to school & across different fields of research. We think it’s important to let go of the ideas of GPA and test score “stats,” “reach schools,” and “safety schools.” It’s very hard to predict how it will go, so just apply to schools you have a genuine interest in and don’t take any of your results personally. You’re gonna be just fine, we promise 🫶🫶 3. Grad school isn’t all just “school” 📚👩🏽‍🔬 For a long time, we imagined that grad school would just be a longer and harder version of undergrad; harder classes and harder tests for 5+ more years, which sounded ✨horrible✨. But it turns out that typically only the first 2 years of physics PhDs are spent actually taking classes. The majority of your PhD is really about doing research. So if you’re an undergrad right now that enjoys doing research but isn’t a fan of classes, don’t rule out a PhD just yet! Classes are temporary, research is forever 💫 (sorta) I’m sure we will have much more to add to this list as we continue in our programs so we will be sure to report back again soon 🫡 but please let us know if this was helpful, and comment below anything else we might have missed! ‼️FOLLOW US FOR MORE‼️ #physics #phd #harvard #yale #gradschool #womeninstem

Everyone talks about “how hard” a PhD is, but there’s so much no one tells you, especially as an international student. Here’s the honest side 👇 1️⃣ A PhD in the U.S. can be truly life-changing Not just academically, your confidence, exposure, network, and career trajectory completely shift once you’re inside the system. 2️⃣ A PhD from a top 100 U.S. university carries serious global value In many cases, it makes you eligible for faculty or research positions in countries like India without needing additional qualifying exams (depending on the institution). That’s a huge advantage no one talks about enough. 3️⃣ Most PhDs in the U.S. are fully funded 💰 Tuition covered + a stipend. Typically $25k–$45k/year, depending on location and funding source. You’re not paying to do a PhD, you’re being paid to train as a researcher. 4️⃣ U.S. PhDs are longer, and that’s not a bad thing Yes, they take more time because of coursework in the first 1–2 years. But those classes actually make you a stronger, more independent researcher long-term. 5️⃣ Getting in is competitive… staying in is transformative Admissions are tough, especially for international students. But once you’re in, the opportunities are unmatched. 6️⃣ Fellowships exist (even if your lab is low on funding) University fellowships, external grants, travel awards, there are so many options if you know where to look. 7️⃣ Conferences & travel are real 🌍 Most U.S. grad schools offer conference funding. I’ve presented, traveled nationally and internationally through graduate school support alone. 8️⃣ Research exposure is next level Top U.S. universities work on cutting-edge problems and regularly publish in high-impact journals, that experience stays with you forever. A PhD in the U.S. is hard, but it can also open doors you didn’t even know existed. If you want to learn how international students actually get into U.S. PhD programs, comment “PhD” 💬 . . . . . . . . . . #phdinusa #indiansinusa #studyabroad #nrilife #indianstudentsabroad

One of the biggest time-wasting mistakes I made early in my PhD was thinking my job was to move as fast as possible. I thought the goal was: experiments → results → papers → credibility. So I rushed everything. I wanted output. Fast. Then one of my supervisors pulled me aside and said something that completely changed how I work: “You’re not being assessed on output right now. You’re being assessed on the SKILLS you’re building.” That hit hard. When you defend your thesis, they don’t just care what you found — they care whether you actually know how to think, analyse, code, write, and problem-solve like a researcher. I used to: • run all my analyses alone • do the ANOVAs and t-tests quickly • write entire sections (or whole papers) in one go • send my supervisors a “finished” product And then I’d get overwhelmed by feedback. Not because my supervisors were harsh — but because I skipped the learning part. What works infinitely better: • send dot points of the questions you want to ask of your data (discuss first) • outline the analyses you’re planning to run (discuss first) • then code → then output → then a short written summary of results • same with writing: bare-bone structure first, then build section by section Stop jumping from A → Z. Go A → B → C. Because if you rush to the final product, you create gaps everywhere in between. And those gaps will show later. A PhD is foundation stage. Build the skills slowly and properly. The output will come — and it’ll be much stronger.

Starting a PhD can feel overwhelming, especially in the first year when everything feels new and long-term progress is hard to see. Looking back now in my third year, there are a few things I started early that I’m really grateful for. 📚 Using a reference manager
Can’t say this one enough! Learning how to organize papers, notes, and citations early has been so important, especially as I am now mostly writing. I use Zotero but Mendeley is another common option. This is something I even have my undergrads do for keeping track of sources and building good research habits early. I did not use one consistently during my masters and it definitely cost me some time 🙈 📈 Measuring progress through habits, not just long-term goals.
Instead of focusing only on big milestones (papers, grants etc), I tried to build consistent habits that I can track: reading a little each week, writing regularly, and showing up even on days I’m not feeling motivated. That consistency added up more than I realized at the time and made me feel like I was making progress before some of the more tangible products came together. 🗂️ Creating a master PhD document.
I had a running document that had the title and status of each of my chapters and continued updating it with research questions, hypotheses, results etc. There wasn’t much there at first, but overtime this became the foundation for my prospectus and I now refer back to it often! ✍️ Not waiting to feel “ready” to start writing. I think this one speaks for itself! Consistent writing has been so helpful for me, and imperfect drafts and developing ideas are part of the process. What has helped you in your PhD that might not be on my list? #phdstudent #phdjourney #phdtips #research #gradschool

Should you do a PhD? I receive countless DMs on guiding people to start their PhDs/Research journeys etc. But it seems like many people do not know the realities of the research environment in academia. This is something most PhD students go through unless you are in some of the best labs and institutions in the world known for research. . So choose wisely.
