Have you seen the herring spawn?! 🤩🐟 Every year along the Pacific Northwest coast, pacific herring gather to release their eggs and sperm. This nature spectacle turns ocean waters to a bright turquoise colour and attracts a wide range of wildlife to feed, such as eagles, gulls, sea lions, whales, and much more! On my recent adventure to Ucluelet (@tourismucluelet), I was sooo fortunate to see herring eggs covering the rocks and algae. The herring spawn usually takes place in March on the east coast of Vancouver Island (@tourismvancouverisland) and it’s a spectacular event to experience! When staying at the Cabins at Terrace Beach (@cabinnation), I walked down to the beach and was overjoyed to see these tiny eggs at low tide. Pacific herring are important fish that support marine food webs and many coastal species! The pacific herring spawn happens every year! So if you missed it this year, don’t worry, because you can catch it next year 😉🤩🐟! Thank you @tylermcave for the clips of birds and turquoise waters! ⚠️ Despite scientists, communities, and Indigenous leaders calling for a moratorium, the Strait of Georgia roe fishery opened: seine on March 1, gillnet on (March 4). Both kill pre-spawn herring for roe export. This season’s gillnet Total Allowable Catch (TAC) is 5,559 tons, seine is 6,075 tons. In a troubling move, DFO raised the total TAC by 1,603 tons to 14,390 tons across all herring fisheries – a 14% harvest rate. 🐟 With incomplete assessments showing 28,620 tons tons of herring so far in the Strait of Georgia, the current combined roe quota could remove ~41% of observed herring before spawning – nearly half before they reproduce. 👉Join our call for a moratorium on theStrait of Georgia kill fishery today. 🔗 Letter writing tools linked in our bio. #herring #PacificHerring #Conservation #PacificWild

🚨🐟 Breaking News! 🚨 Right now, hundreds of tons of herring, the foundation of the coastal food web, are being pulled out of the Salish Sea each night. Pacific Wild documented commercial fishing vessels harvesting one of the last remaining herring fishing areas open in British Columbia (B.C.). While many regions remain closed due to fragile stocks, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has approved over 2,000 tons to be removed from the Salish Sea this winter by the Food and Bait fishery. These are resident herring stocks, the same year-round, local herring that juvenile Chinook salmon depend on for food at one of the most critical times in their life cycle. As these salmon grow, they become the primary and preferred prey of the critically endangered Southern Resident killer whales. When we remove herring, we starve Chinook. When Chinook decline, these orcas starve too. Instead of protecting this critical forage fish at the base of the food chain, herring caught by this fishery are being turned into bait, pet food, farmed salmon and tuna feed, and feed for captive marine mammals. The herring remaining in the Salish Sea are the backbone of the marine food web. They are worth far more alive in the water than taken out and turned into low-value products. Pacific Wild is calling for an immediate temporary moratorium on commercial herring fishing, excluding spawn-on-kelp, and a shift to ecosystem-based management to safeguard Pacific herring for both human, and non-human, generations to come. #ProtectPacificHerring #BIGlittlefish #PacificHerring #Herring #ChinookSalmon #SRKW
