And this can only be possible if your product people are making the calls.
Finance people would be highly against this decision.
You see, there’s data and then there are undertones. These are cropping up sentiments are still laying low in comparison to the popular current narrative.
And to do what Hinge was able to do was only possible if you’re understanding this undertone or underlying sentiment much before everyone else can. You’d not find any data to support it or plot its growth curve to show how significant this change will be.
All you can do is to bet on it and bring it out in the market much before others can.
And then when the undertone becomes a mass problem, you’re the go to platform for change.
There are 2 kinds of companies — push companies and pull companies.
Pull companies are adjusting companies. These are the ones you write long stories on how they survived changing times.
But then there are push companies. These push humanity to do things in the way it wants. It raises the bar high for humanity to play catch-up. More of less such companies change the world and industries. They cause tidal shifts that all other pull companies ultimately have to adjust to.
Hinge is one such company.
And this also comes from doing what is right. Just trying to take out the worst out of society because it’s creating user growth and retention will ultimately not workout nicely for these companies. Growth at all costs is not a great long term strategy. Being right at all cost is.
