We’re talking about a dial made of UV-sensitive photochromic material. It literally changes color in sunlight. Step outside and the dial goes all smoked black, not just to look cool (which it absolutely does), but also to protect the oils in the skeletonized movement from UV damage. Indoors, you get a full view of the gorgeous, sculptural movement doing its thing; outdoors, it transforms into a refined, almost mysterious timepiece that keeps its mechanical secrets hidden. Basically, this watch is Clark Kent and Superman rolled into one. This is the Holthinrichs LAB Series 1.24 — an architectural case made possible by powder 3D printing powdered Grade 5 titanium “Signature Ornament” case (38.5mm, 46mm lug-to-lug, 9.85mm thick) with those impossibly thin, skeletonised lugs that only metal printing can pull off. Under the dial is a top-grade Sellita SW-300, but the punchline is the rotor: Holthinrichs makes a hand-carved, patinated rotor in-house, heat/acid treated so it visually rhymes with the dial’s copper-oxide chaos and gold. The dial itself is a domed, carved brass base with forced copper patina, then finished with hand-applied 24k gold leaf by The Dial Artist. This is inspired by the oxidised copper trim in their new offices in the old Armoury in Delft. I had a first look on the Holthinrichs x THC Signature Ornament ‘Concrete Jungle’, a collaboration between my friends at Holthinrichs Watches and The Horology Club (THC) in Hong Kong. In my initial impressions, this watch might be one of the most unique case design I’ve seen in a while. Holthinrichs’ signature design language shines through in a bold new way. This limited-edition piece is available in two distinct variants: The LAB Series, where the case is fully 3D-printed and meticulously finished by hand, with special hollowed-out lugs, and the CNC-milled Series, both crafted from Grade 5 titanium. The real star here, is the super-luminous infused concrete dial, which is a stunning blend of modern innovation and craftsmanship. The watch will be available for preorder starting December 20th, 2024, at 6 PM Hong Kong Time, and orders will be open for just two weeks. The LAB Series is especially exclusive, with only 50 numbered pieces being made. For more information, please visit @the.horology.club page. I present this magnificent piece from Holthinrichs Watches!! This is the Signature Ornament Delft Edition developed to honor their home town. It is just remarkable with blue porcelain dial, specially designed Breguet styled numerals and blued hands under a domed Saphire crystal. I am told they only have about 100 of these dials that came out unblemished and I damaged from the long difficult process to make them. My business partner and I are honored to have visited the Holthinrichs’ atelier in Delft to select these gems to honor the 1 year anniversary of our company!!! ☘️ ☘️ ☘️ Thank you for your trust hard work, loyalty and friendship my brother Rob! Today I want to share one of my absolute favourites from GWD — the Holthinrichs Ornament Nouveau. And yes… I still can’t pronounce the name properly 😅 Michiel, you’ll have to teach me next time! Again. This watch blew me away. First thing that grabs you is the case — inspired by architecture, made with 3D printing, and finished in matte. Holthinrichs cases always have this flowy, sculptural feel, and this one takes it to the next level. The dial is a stunner too. I’m a sucker for skeletonisation and the mix of gold, blue and silver just works. The hand-hammered base gives it so much depth, and then you’ve got brushed and polished details, beautifully shaped hands with a capped pinion (I love that detail), gold chatons calling back to pocket watches, and even sapphire components at 6 o’clock — wild stuff. Inside is their first in-house movement, the HW-M02, which fits the whole vibe perfectly. Strap is brown hornback alligator — unusual and pretty cool. Personally I’d probably go black or blue, just because brown doesn’t always play nice with my tattoos 😅 but that’s just me. Overall, this watch just ticks so many boxes: architecture-inspired design, skeletonisation, high-end finishing, innovative details — and most importantly, amazing people behind it. It was a real pleasure meeting Michiel, Damiaen and Joakim. Passionate, kind, and clearly in love with what they do. The Ornament Nouveau is easily one of the most exciting pieces I’ve seen in a while. A true wrist-raiser and a goosebumps-giver. This is exactly what haute horlogerie should be about.
