Your mitochondria aren’t just tiny power plants in your cells… they’re listening. At midlife, mitochondrial efficiency can drop by up to 50%, driving fatigue, brain fog, insulin resistance and high insulin and glucose levels, damage to blood vessels (esp in women), and accelerated aging. Here’s the twist most people miss: your social life talks directly to your cells. In one study, people with strong social ties had healthier mitochondrial DNA copy numbers — a biomarker linked to energy, longevity, and resilience. In another study, higher narcissistic traits were linked lower mtDNA copy number. Conversely, traits like extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness (which Brad has in droves!) were associated with higher mtDNA copy number. Translation? Your mitochondria may thrive when you’re thriving together. Everyone should test their lipoprotein(a) level❣ Elevated lipoprotein(a) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Women tend to have higher levels than men. High Lp(a) levels are inherited (via the LPA gene) and confer causal risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease independent of LDL-C. It puts you at higher risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and aortic valve stenosis. Treatment with estradiol in women can lower Lp(a) by 13-44%. Elevated Lp(a) is common with roughly a quarter of people exceed clinically relevant thresholds. Population data suggest 27% have Lp(a) >50 mg/dL (≈125 nmol/L), highlighting why once-in-a-lifetime testing is increasingly recommended esp among those at highest risk: Black individuals, South Asians, Whites, East Asians.
