JOWhen left idle for too long, the original Xbox 🎮 would sometimes emit faint, eerie noises—static crackles, distorted whispers, and what sounded like distant radio chatter 👀. In the stillness of a bedroom or basement, it was easy to mistake for something… supernatural.
But the effect WAS NOT a bug—it was fully intentional. Microsoft deliberately included those sounds in the dashboard’s ambient audio 🎧. According to Xbox spokesperson Larry Hryb (a.k.a. Major Nelson), the developers used altered public domain audio from space missions 🚀
“Those creepy ambient audio clips were public domain audio from NASA transmissions from the Apollo days that we tweaked for that sound.”

The team wanted the Xbox to feel like mysterious alien tech 👽 —powerful, cold, and a little unsettling. So instead of silence, you got warped whispers from outer space 🪐. It added a strange, sci-fi texture to the console’s identity.
