Probably my #1 question - how/when to prune hydrangea trees. Hydrangea trees are “panicle” hydrangeas that have been selected and grown to be in tree format. This means their pruning requirements are slightly different from their bush cousins, but a lot of the basics about where to cut are the same. I am always on the conservative side when I prune these trees because clients do not want bald spots on their trees as they leaf out in the summer. We can always take a little bit more off in the summer if the blooms are too heavy. And most important: thanks to my neighbor Chris, who let me borrow his tree for this video. #hydrangea #gardening #springgardening #gardenchores

Panicle Hydrangeas can be pruned in late Winter/ early Spring before the new growth starts. In Chicago that is March/April. I can’t always respond to comments so for those of you that are experienced gardeners, please jump in and help as much as you can. I am a Garden Coach located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. I do on-site sessions right in your garden if you live in the Chicagoland area from March until November. Click the link in my bio to learn more. I also do virtual sessions for people that don’t live near me. From plant selection and design, flowers to vegetables and of course, pruning, book a session with me on my website at PowersPlants.com! My calendar opens up new appointments every week so check back weekly during the season!

Don’t make this mistake with your hydrangeas. Before you prune, make sure you know which type of hydrangea you have growing in your garden. Right now in late winter and early spring many gardeners start pruning hydrangeas, but different types flower on different growth. Some hydrangeas form their flower buds the year before on what’s called old wood. If those stems are cut back now, you may remove the flowers before they ever open. Hydrangeas that usually bloom on old wood include: 🌸 Bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) 🌸 Mountain hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata) 🌸 Oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) Because of that, pruning should be minimal. I usually leave my oakleaf hydrangeas mostly alone unless they need shaping or there is dead growth to remove. For bigleaf hydrangeas, I prefer to wait until the plant fully leafs out before touching it. Once the leaves emerge, it becomes much easier to see which stems are alive and which ones didn’t survive winter. At that point I’ll remove dead stems and clip off old blooms if needed. Reblooming varieties like Endless Summer can bloom on both old and new wood, but the earliest flowers still come from buds that formed the previous season, so I still prune them carefully after the plant fully leafs out. Hydrangeas that bloom on new wood can be pruned in late winter or early spring. These include: 🌸 Panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) 🌸 Smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) These are the ones I’m pruning back right now. A helpful rule of thumb when pruning hydrangeas is to avoid removing more than about one-third of the plant at a time. Save this post so you remember before pruning your hydrangeas this spring. 🌿🌸

How to prune Panicle Hydrangeas! Pinnacle hydrangeas bloom on new wood so they can be pruned anytime between full dormancy which means it’s consistently under 32° at night through early spring. The easiest way to prune is defined last year‘s growth and count 3 to 4 buds up from the Y. Prune right above the-bud. Next cut out all branches thinner than a pencil, unless the plant is less than a two years old. If you have a young hydrangea, you’ll just want to use your judgment and create structure with the thickest branches. If you do not know what type of hydrangea you have, comment “VARIETY”, and I will send you my reel on how to identify your hydrangea. #paniclehydrangea #hydrangeaqueen #hydrangeapaniculata #hydrangeapaniculatalimelight #limelighthydrangea #limelighthydrangeas #gardenreels #flowerreels #pruning #hydrangeatips

There’s more than one way to prune a Hydrangea paniculata (the ice cream hydrangea!) 🍦 They bloom on new growth, which means they’re very forgiving when it comes to pruning. There’s general rule: a harder prune = bigger but fewer flowers. 🌿 1. Light Prune (Lazy Prune) Simply cut just below the old flower heads. Produces lots of smaller blooms and creates a taller, natural-looking plant. You’ll get around 40 flowers on a mature plant. 🌿 2. Medium Prune (Balanced Option) Cut stems to about 40 cm above the ground. Produces medium-sized blooms with strong stems. A great middle ground used by many nurseries. It’ll give you about 30 flowers on a mature plant. 🌿 3. Hard Prune (Brave Cut) Cut stems down to about 20 cm above the ground. Results in fewer but very large flower heads. Keeps plants compact and structured. You’ll get about 20 giant flowers on a mature plant. 🌿 4. Don’t Prune at All (The Easiest Option!) Leave the plant completely untouched.. You’ll get smaller flowers, but still plenty of them. Plants grow taller and more tree-like with gnarly branches, which is quite sexy! Flowering may also start earlier, giving a very natural look. Best time to prune: Late winter to early spring before new growth appears (NOW!!) Awesome advice from @living.creations and @schoemaker.alex 🍦

How to Prune Panicle Hydrangeas in Spring — Step by Step Panicle hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata) are some of the easiest and most rewarding hydrangeas to grow. They bloom on new wood, which means spring pruning helps create stronger branches and bigger summer flowers. These shrubs are known for their upright cone-shaped blooms that shift colors beautifully through the season. Popular varieties include: • Limelight – bold lime green blooms that fade to pink • Fire Light – white flowers that turn rich pink-red • Bobo – compact size, perfect for small spaces • Pinky Winky – dramatic two-toned blooms on strong stems • Little Lime Punch – compact with a colorful punch of lime, white, pink, and red Pruning Steps: 1. Start with clean, sharp pruners. 2. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. 3. Cut out thin branches smaller than a pencil—they won’t support strong blooms. 4. On outer branches, count up to the third healthy bud from the base. 5. Cut just above that third bud to encourage strong, flowering stems. 6. Step back and shape the plant evenly for a full, beautiful look. #HydrangeaCare #PanicleHydrangea #SpringPruning #ProvenWinners #LimelightHydrangea #FireLightHydrangea #GrowForMeGardening #GardenTips #DIYGardening #HydrangeaSeason

Hydrangea pruning season is here ✂️ How you prune makes all the difference and it starts with knowing your variety. Paniculata hydrangeas can be cut back hard to encourage strong stems and big blooms, while macrophylla types need a lighter touch to keep their flowers coming. Watch to see the difference and give your hydrangeas the right start for the season ahead.

WHEN TO PRUNE? ⬇️ 🧚🏻 Early Spring * Lots of useful content about hydrangeas is in my books. Link to books in my bio. EXTRA INFO ⬇️ 🧚🏻It’s recommended to start pruning in early Spring 🧚🏻Hydrangea arborescens and paniculata bloom on new wood so dormant pruning does not reduce blossoms. TOP TIP!!!⬇️ 🧚🏻If you cut your hydrangeas all the way back to the ground, your plants will produce less flowers, but they’ll be very large. 🧚🏻If you cut back 1/3 of the plant, your hydrangeas will produce more flowers and they will be smaller. I personally prefer smaller blooms on sturdier stems and I only cut back 1/3 of the plant. . . #hydrangea #hydrangeas #garden #gardeninglife #explorepage #gardening #pruning

In the end, this plant would never be pruned in nature anyways 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m excited to work on these trees and make them better for next year! #limelight #hydrangea #hydrangeatree #hydrangeapruning
