This is the Ebbinghaus effect, discovered in 1901. The illusion is so strong that even measuring doesn't convince immediately. Evolutionarily useful: judging predator size depends on whether it's near a tree or grass. The illusion persists even when you know about it — visual cortex processes before awareness. That video is a classic example of a mind-bending optical illusion! It looks like the jet ski is hovering over a frozen lake, but as you saw at the end, it is definitely moving. ​Here is the breakdown of why your brain sees it as "still." ​1. The Frame Rate Sync (Strobe Effect) ​The primary reason is a phenomenon called aliasing. ​The Water: As the jet ski moves at high speeds, the engine and the hull create tiny, consistent vibrations and ripples in the water. ​The Camera: Digital cameras capture video at a specific number of frames per second (fps). ​The Sync: When the frequency of those water ripples perfectly matches (or is a multiple of) the camera's frame rate, each frame captures the ripple in the exact same position. To our eyes, the water appears to be a static, solid surface because we never see the "in-between" motion. ​2. Glass-Like Water Conditions ​The lake in the video is incredibly calm and "glassy." ​Without large waves or whitecaps to provide a visual reference for movement, there is very little "motion blur" or texture change for your eyes to track. ​Because the water is so clear and still, the reflection of the sky doesn't change much as the boat moves across it, further tricking your brain into thinking the background is a static image. ​3. High Shutter Speed ​In bright daylight, cameras use a very high shutter speed to prevent the image from being blown out (too bright). ​A high shutter speed eliminates motion blur. ​Instead of seeing a "smear" of water passing by, the camera captures every tiny droplet and ripple with crisp, frozen detail. When these crisp images are played back, the lack of blur makes the motion feel unnatural or nonexistent. ​4. Stability of the Camera ​The camera is likely mounted directly to the jet ski's chassis. Since the camera and the jet ski are moving as one unit, there is zero relative motion between them.
