Big news for museums: All previously terminated IMLS grants have been reinstated, a major win for institutions across the country. The National Museum Survey is also back underway, and Congress is moving toward FY26 funding that would keep IMLS nearly at FY25 levels, with strong bipartisan support. As Nichole shared, these victories come after a difficult year and are made possible by the museum community’s powerful advocacy. Keep speaking up. I can not imagine a world without libraries, so here are some action items you can take this week: Easy action items you can take this week— - Like, Share, comment on this post to help get the word out -Make sure EVERY member of your household has a library card; make sure all your friends and family have one, too -Sign up anyone you know who doesn’t have a library card -Check out a book or two from your libraries -Find your local Friends of the Library and find out how you can get involved -Donate to your local library if you can If you have more time— -Check out who is on your Library Board: are there empty seats that need to be filled? -Call your local, state and federal officials and tell them to PROTECT OUR LIBRARIES —Go to SaveIMLS.org and take action —Write an editorial for your local newspaper highlighting your library’s importance in community and community building, supporting intellectual freedom and the grave threat to libraries. Cincinnati museums are bracing for cuts to a major source of funding. President Trump signed an executive order to take money from the Institute Of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Some of the exhibits you've seen at the Contemporary Arts Center, the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, and the Children's Museum have been funded by IMLS grants. The zoo said that the awards fund its research and has allowed them to renovate the Wings of The World enclosure. It currently has three active grants and wonders if they'll be honored. Some of the funding that makes these galleries possible could soon be gone. The Cincinnati Museum Center said that IMLS grants help ideas get off the ground. In 2023, the museum center won $250,000 to create an indigenous peoples exhibit that's slated to open next year. "IMLS' support doing that allows us to kind of get that gallery going and show something to donors [and] to supporters who want to see that vision become a reality, but someone has to get that started," said Cincinnati Museum Center Vice President of Marketing and Communications Cody Hefner. Hefner said that the grants are highly competitive. Applicants have to prove how the money will educate the public. "It's not just a blank check or a blank project. It is a very specific goal and a very specific purpose. The IMLS funds and presents these grants, and it's not something that happens every year," Hefner said. The Contemporary Arts Center relies on a triennial grant that funds roughly 31% of its teen programs. Carolyn Hefner said that at-risk children can get paid internships, meet mentors, and get job training through the CAC. "We're going to have to scale back our free teen programs without the support through Museums for America. That means that we will have to shift to finding additional dollars to replace that," said Contemporary Arts Center Chief of External Affairs Hefner. In 2024, the IMLS gave out $294 million. That's about 0.004% of the federal budget.

The IMLS is under attack, and very few people are discussing it. The government is actively attempting to censor knowledge and, therefore, our ability to think for ourselves. And they won’t stop with libraries once they get a taste of that power. Everything is up for grabs, but libraries are an institution needed in every community. They do so much more than provide books, which I have discussed before. I know this isn’t my usual content, or even close to it. But I can’t just let this happen in silence, and maybe this video or article will reach at least one person who cares and takes action. This is serious. There have been even more updates since I made this video and article, so I have included any additional news stories in the resources of the Substack. Please check out the Substack as well. A short-form video can’t compare to all the information in the article. But the least we can do is be informed about what is happening and know there are things we can do to take action.
