European paper wasp colonies, Polistes dominula, are split into alphas, the dominant egg layers, and betas, the subordinate workers. To choose the alpha, members of the colony fight. Alpha wasps will bite and mount beta wasps to show them who's boss. But the wasps are smart- they don't want to pick battles they'll lose. So before a fight, they size up rivals based on face color. The darker the face, the stronger their opponent. Researchers wondered what happened to wasps who looked strong but weren't. And in this study, Tibbets and colleagues added yellow or black makeup to beta wasps' faces and them fight. Wasps painted darker, but were weak, were bullied and mounted 6x more than unchanged faces, and 2x more as those painted yellow. For wasps, failing to live up to appearances stings-- literally

The beauty of Hymenoptera; bees, ants and wasps :) Bees and ants are loved by many, getting their own cool t-shirts and movies... But when it comes to wasps all of a sudden everyone hates them! Wasps are very misunderstood creatures that deserve a lot more love. When I tell people I absolutely adore wasps I almost always get hit with the same questions... "Why? But they sting?... Aren't they evil?" Some bees also sting! But you don't see them getting such a bad rap? Just as there are stingless bees, many wasps are also stingless! The majority of adult wasps are strict vegetarians, feeding off nectar and helping pollinate by flying from flower to flower. 99% of wasps are solitary, meaning these adorable single mums aren't hunting for their own meal, they're collecting prey such as cockroaches and spiders to feed their hungry babies, who require protein rich diets to correctly develop. It's fascinating how intelligent these wasps are! Knowing the exact amount of protein needed per larvae, making these calculations in their tiny brains to ensure the correct amount of meat is provided in each brood chamber. Speaking of brood chambers, the iconic hexagonal shaped nests you see bees create are accidental! By using soft wax, placing round tubes next to each other crushes the sides into the hexagons. Wasps however have been seen to use their antennae to measure the perfect sized sides to form their chambers out of mud, or "paper" which they mix with their saliva into paper nests, making their construction a deliberate design choice. There's so much I could say about wasps, and if you're really interested in learning more I highly recommend the book "endless forms" by Seirian Sumner. This is just the first of my many wasp fact dumps to come, but I hope you've learnt something, and maybe will consider changing your mind about nature's hard working wasp mums! At first glance, this may appear to be just a single wasp nest, but inside, it can house thousands of individual wasps at any given time. Common wasp hives typically contain between 1,000 and 5,000 wasps, while larger species like yellowjackets can create colonies that exceed 10,000 during the height of summer. Each layer of the nest is meticulously designed for maximum efficiency, featuring distinct areas dedicated to larvae, food storage, and the queen. By late summer, these colonies reach their peak size, which is why the presence of wasps can suddenly feel overwhelming. As temperatures begin to drop, most of the colony will perish, leaving only new queens to survive and kickstart the cycle once more the following year.
