When I was a young actor, I always approached acting from the perspective of portraying emotions. I always felt like I had to act a feeling to make it seem clear and that it had to be the most extreme version of that emotion possible.
But as I trained more and got more professional experience, I learned to avoid “acting the emotion” as it created an interpretation of an emotion rather than being from an authentic place.
So here’s my tips for incorporating emotion into your monologue:
1. Instead of acting the emotion, act the action. Think about who your scene partner is and what you want from them. What is the conflict? Why do you need this now? And what are you actually doing to that person. In real life when we want something, we use actions to get what we want and emotions come as a byproduct of how we feel about that person and our circumstances. So instead of focusing on feeling the emotion, imagine your circumstances and let the emotions come naturally. A sudden, authentic emotion reads better than a pre planned one.
An example of this actually comes from this audio (Iron Man). The performance works in the movie because the anger comes from the circumstances of the character. He is told that what he is creating is impossible, and he tries to prove to him that he’s wrong. His anger is a byproduct of his goal and is motivated by his jealousy and the circumstances around him.
2. Even when you are playing an emotional scene, there are different ways to show that emotion. Anger for example isn’t just screaming. It can be internal. It can be calm and direct. It can be a slow build. There are many different ways to be angry, so try to play with more than just the most extreme version.
