What other space stories do you want us to cover? > Vikram Sarabhai, founder of India’s space program, wanted to find a launch site on the eastern coast. That is when Sriharikota was selected as a satellite launching station of India. in 1969. > As of 14 July 2023, there have been a total of 89 launches, including 74 successful launches, 5 partial successes, and 10 failed launches from Sriharikota. Why was Sriharikota selected? > Because it is in the east. So it can take advantage of the Earth's rotation. > It is near the equator. That is where the Earth's rotation is the fastest. So it can take advantage of that as well. > It is also near a huge water body. Debris can fall there in case of any misfortune event. > It also has strong soil which is needed to brace the impact of the rocket launch > And it is full of security. Because it is an island- spans approximately 175 sq. km. and boasts a 50 km coastline. But India is building a second launch pad as well! > Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will get its second launchpad in Kulasekarapattinam in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district. > A spaceport at Kulasekarapattinam will provide a strategic advantage to ISRO as small satellites launched from the coastal hamlet can fly straight to the south pole without having to go to the southeast side first to avoid Sri Lanka, which is currently the case from Sriharikota. > The new launchpad will help ISRO save fuel and have a dedicated space for launching Small Satellite Launch Vehicles (SSLV). ... In Hindi, they're called "gaganauts" rather than astronauts. India’s Gaganyaan mission represents the country’s ambitious foray into human spaceflight. Developed by ISRO, the spacecraft aims to carry three astronauts into low Earth orbit for a planned duration of three days. Scheduled for launch aboard the GSLV Mk III rocket, Gaganyaan includes critical safety measures such as an emergency escape system and advanced environmental controls. Key tests, including crew module recovery and abort systems, have been conducted, with crew training underway in India and Russia.
