Earlier this month, a dead 40-tonne sperm whale washed up on Denison Beach near Bicheno, raising concerns about sharks and other potential impacts to local residents. But the question of what to do with the carcass is dividing the community. A petition has now been created by former Olympian and Bicheno resident, Shane Gould, to have the dead whale removed to "help protect the community", while others believe we should let "nature take its course". *** A WHALEY GOOD EASTER SURPRISE FOR PORTSEA *** The Easter Bunny appears to have called in sick for his Peninsula coastal delivery this year, but a very special replacement stepped in and did not disappoint. A juvenile humpback whale cruised past Portsea Pier and lingered in the area, with multiple sightings from both land and water. Now for the less impressive part. It is disappointing to see several videos already circulating that show boats chasing the whale and getting far too close. With whale migration season fast approaching, this is a timely reminder of the regulations in place to protect them. • Boats must stay at least 200 metres away from whales• You cannot approach from directly in front or behind• No chasing, no cutting them off, and no circling for a better photo• Drones must not be used within 500 metres of a whale or flown above them. This includes not flying directly overhead, hovering, or allowing a drone’s shadow to pass over the animal These are Victorian regulations, not suggestions. They exist to protect these animals, especially as migration season approaches. We will add a link to the official marine mammal guidelines in the comments. Let the whale do its thing, keep your distance, and help ensure we continue to see incredible encounters like this along our coastline. A group of fishermen had a surprise visit from a pod of dolphins while boating along the Whanganui coast. Liam Simon was fishing with friends Jayden Takarangi and Brayden Yakas on the Whanganui coast. Between Kai Iwi Beach and Ototoka Beach, they noticed something in the water. “We went to cruise out a bit deeper because we weren’t having too much luck in close,” Simon said. While moving away from shore, “we noticed just big splashes in front of us and then all of a sudden the dolphins were swimming around us”. New Zealand Whale and Dolphin trustee and professor emeritus at the University of Otago Liz Slooten said they were common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) based on the video. 🔗 Get the full story via the link in our bio.

Can a day at the beach really turn into a deadly disaster? Here are the shocking details: * A British couple was pulled from the water at a popular Australian beach * Despite efforts to revive them, both individuals tragically lost their lives * The incident is currently under investigation, with authorities working to determine the cause Now, we have to ask: should beaches be held responsible for ensuring the safety of their visitors, or is it up to individuals to take necessary precautions? #News #Tragedy #Australia #BeachSafety #Travel #BritishTourists #WaterRescue #FatalIncident #CoastalTragedy #SwimmingSafety #RipCurrent #OceanDangers #DeadlyDisaster #BreakingNews #TouristSafety

This week The Lifeguards were met with a different kind of rescue. A beaked nosed whale beached itself at south Bondi in the huge swell. Lifeguards @m_jenks and Jake were on hand for it. The whale was exhausted and had sustained a number of cuts and lacerations.. The boys rallied together a group of men to help get it back in the water. Luckily the waves were washing through enough that they were able to float it, and get it back in the ocean. After a slow start the whale eventually found a rhythm and made it out to sea. Thank you to all those who helped on the beach and also a big thanks to @kyleosullivan_ who paddled next to the whale and helped guide it out past the waves. Great job boys ! #bondilifeguardsofficial #bondi #beachedas

Today we came across a very young calf of a Southern right whale, estimated to be less than one month old, along the coast of Misty Cliffs near Scarborough. Sadly, the little calf had been washed ashore by the powerful waves. Herminizando!
