Book 3 of The Lost Souls series is coming along. Ish. I’m reading through the first draft and boy, can that be one of the scariest parts of writing. Because you have this thing you created, which took a lot out of you, but it’s rough and jagged, needs moving and sanding and it needs both more and less. It can feel overwhelming staring at the mess. This will be the last book in this series, which adds another weight. How do I end this series that has become a part of me? So, to my fellow writers out there, in whatever stage of writing you may be in, what a lovely privilege it is to be able to create and give of ourselves so that pieces of us live between the quotations and the struggles of our characters. Let's debate: happy endings vs sad endings?? Personally, I'm a huge fan of "sad endings." But the ending has to be well-written and close everything off well. An unsettling ending is my jam, but I still want to feel satisfied. Does that make sense? Don't get me wrong— I love seeing characters get what they want and find some sort of peace or safety, especially at the end of a series. But I find myself happier with endings that don't always go the way you expect it to and leave some things hurting when you walk away. I want to think about a book long after I put it down. But there are exceptions of course, at least for my taste! Sometimes I can appreciate a happily ever after in a standalone, if it feels realistic enough. I guess my solid answer is "it depends" lol. But I do enjoy writing my silly little unsettling endings ;) Thoughts?
