15 years ago, when I was in the throes of addiction, I found myself one day, barreling toward my drug of choice. I was like a wave on the sea, blown and tossed back and forth by the wind every few minutes. “Yes I will, no I won’t, yes I will, no I won’t.” Even as my hands put the car in gear, and my body drove me to the spot, my fingers clutched the item, and I enacted the ritual, I cried out to in “prayer” saying aloud, “God help me!” This was insanity. An experience many addicts understand, like a loss of free will. Thank God, later I learned that surrender to a Higher Power is the only “proper use of the will.” Religious people like me sometimes use God as a scapegoat, when we could surrender and be free: 1. Instead of throwing up a wild “God help me” in the midst of violating our values, you can build a life of regular embodied attunement with a Presence that soothes more effectively than your addictions. 2. Instead of bypassing grief with “God has a plan,” you can give space for deep-throated lament, consciously aware that Infinite Love is sharing in your sobs. 3. Instead of checking off all the spiritual tasks (prayer, community, generosity, serving, meditation, etc) hoping to be rewarded by the universe for your efforts, you can treat the practices as portals to Gracious Presence, which is never earned but embodied. 4. Instead of “forgiving” by pretending to forget, you can acknowledge both the poison and the medicine your body caries from past harms, and learn to move through that as the doorway to peace. These are some of the most insidious hooks I see holding religious people back from true peace and deep rest in the soul. Comment “STUCK” if you can relate, and you want some help getting unstuck. #traumahealing #spirituality #recovery #deconstruction #innerpeace

What if the very thing that almost destroyed you was actually meant to save you? Maybe that sounds absurd. Maybe even painful if you are in the middle of addiction or have lived through it. But what if your addiction was not a punishment. Not a sign of weakness. Not a moral failure. What if it was a call from your soul? The addict is not a sinner. Not a failure. The addict is a seeker, a mystic who lost their way. Someone who deeply longs for unity, for connection, for something greater than themselves. But searching in the wrong place. Not because you are weak, but because something in you remembers that there is more. That ordinary reality, the “normal” life, is not enough. Addiction is not only a chemical problem, it is a spiritual crisis. A kind of homesickness of the soul. You are trying to find again what you once felt: connection, freedom, peace. And for a moment it works. Everything feels right. Until the feeling disappears, and you reach again for the very thing that pulls you further away from yourself. The truth is that your hunger was never the problem. Your longing is sacred. Only the path you chose became poison instead of nourishment. Addiction strips away what is not real, your mask, your pride, your certainties. Until nothing remains but you. Empty. Raw. Real. And in that breaking open, healing can begin. You are not broken. You are being opened. Not punished, but prepared. Every relapse is not simply failure, but a message: look deeper, feel what you are still avoiding. Addiction is often not a sign of feeling too little, but of feeling too much. You are sensitive, intense, alive. You feel the suffering of the world inside your own body. You are not “too much”, you were built to feel, to carry, to heal. Only no one ever showed you how. And when you finally stop fighting, not giving up, but surrendering, you discover that you were never truly separated. Not from love. Not from God. Not from yourself. The addiction was not your ending. It was your awakening. You were never weak. You were chosen to feel deeply. And those who have walked through the darkness are often the ones who learn to carry the light.

Some awakenings arrive quietly through prayer or reflection. Others arrive when life removes the mask we have been hiding behind. Those moments can feel uncomfortable. Our pride is touched. Our defences rise. We may want to deny what has been revealed. Yet within that exposure is the beginning of something sacred. When truth surfaces we are given a choice. We can retreat into old patterns or we can step forward with honesty and humility. Recovery asks us to choose the second path. Every time we face ourselves with courage we clear another obstacle from the spirit. What once felt like humiliation becomes liberation. What once felt like shame becomes wisdom. Sometimes the awakening we resist the most is the one that frees us the most. #SacredSobriety #SpiritualAwakening #RecoveryJourney #OneDayAtATime #InnerGrowth
