Sign Language Interpreter is a highly skilled and creative job, and we know it can be overwhelming to become a Registered Sign Language Interpreter.
Sign Language Interpreters require:
✅ deep cultural and linguistic understanding
✅ expert knowledge of subject matter
✅ the ability to communicate clearly
✅ and also require professional qualifications (long training, practice, and experience)
Apart from needing an excellent understanding of two (or more) languages, interpreters need to have excellent people skills and be a really good communicator.
For those just starting on the journey, be prepared, it is likely to be a long one. At a minimum you are probably going to need at least seven years to get to, ‘fully qualified’ or Registered status, but it will be highly rewarding, as you’ll be entering in a whole new world where you will learn a way to communicate in a rich language that will help you become truly awesome!

CAHave you ever felt pressured to sacrifice your accessibility needs because of other people? Could be a parent, teacher, employer or even “friend”.
It’s frustrating when others think they know better than you do.
The last job I had is the last time I will bend on what I need for accessibility. I have always said I need interpreters for meetings or groups. It’s extremely tiring to read lips and hard to keep up with everyone who ultimately talk over one another.
My previous job, I had a boss yell at me for something I did not know was said in a meeting. News flash, it was never said in the meeting but because I didn’t have interpreters I took what he said as truth, and just thought I had missed it being said. My coworkers and direct manager had never even heard him mention what he was yelling at me about. They were just as confused as I was.
Sadly, that is not the only time I have allowed others to dictate the accessibility resources I utilize. Especially when it comes to employment. Not anymore though!

Hello! I am Krishna. I am a Deaf interpreter from Canada and moved to the US in Boston, MA. So what’s up with today? It’s National Interpreter Appreciation Day! Both Deaf and Hearing interpreters have been a fabulous team! Working together to make sure clear communication is being exchanged! Our efforts in translating differing languages show our hard work in critical thinking. Also, I want to emphasize that there are not many Asian people who become professional interpreters. There are only a few. I applaud our small group of Asian interpreters who give their time to contribute for the Deaf community. So you can imagine that there are not many Deaf Asians who can relate to Asian interpreters with same culture. I applaud and appreciate for your involvement!
