This year’s IPBES takes on a systemic risk: business.
All businesses have an impact on nature in one way or another, therefore making data and knowledge available to businesses is vital for them to be able to better understand risks and opportunities as they work towards their sustainablility goals.
Although this comes with many challenges, we are grateful to be a part of the youth presence here, and bring our ambition to the conversations!
Expanding our conservation family and spending time with so many people interested in using science to protect biodiversity is the best thing about attending @ipbes_.

EC1 milione di specie rischiano l’estinzione a causa dell’impatto umano, secondo le stime della piattaforma IPBES delle Nazioni Unite 🦎🦈🐻🌿 Incluse molte specie italiane.
Un fenomeno, quello della sesta estinzione di massa, che non si vedeva dai tempi dell’estinzione dei dinosauri. E i responsabili siamo noi, e il nostro modello economico.
💡Ma cosa può fare ognuno di noi per contrastarlo?
Oggi mi voglio concentrare su una risposta in particolare: CITTADINANZA ATTIVA. Per esempio:
• Votare (sempre!) e supportare candidati che mettono clima e ambiente al primo posto;
• Utilizzare la propria piattaforma, piccola o grande che sia, per sensibilizzare. Anche online! Se riuscite a convincere 3 amici a votare, avete già giocato un ruolo importante!
• Sostenere campagne e associazioni che si battono per la Natura (e perché no, iniziare un progetto vostro a livello locale!);
• Scendere in piazza per proteste e manifestazioni a favore della biodiversità (per esempio: manifestazioni sulla coesistenza con gli orsi in Trentino);
• Segnalare atti illeciti a forze dell’ordine o autorità competenti;
• Scrivere a giornali e politici per denunciare problemi e chiedere azioni concrete.

USNearly one million species are facing extinction due to changes in land and sea use, direct exploitation, climate change, pollution, and invasive alien species – that’s according to the latest report from the Intergovernmental Science Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
Bees and other pollinators play important roles in biodiversity – approximately 80% of all flowering plant species need pollinators and they contribute to 35% of the world’s crop production.

Essa afirmação não é exagero: está em linha com o que mostram relatórios científicos recentes. O IPBES (Plataforma Intergovernamental sobre Biodiversidade e Serviços Ecossistêmicos) estimou em 2019 que 1 milhão de espécies de plantas e animais estão ameaçadas de extinção, muitas já nas próximas décadas, se não houver mudanças radicais nos sistemas de produção e consumo. O IPCC (Painel Intergovernamental sobre Mudanças Climáticas) também alerta que a perda de biodiversidade está diretamente ligada ao colapso de cadeias alimentares, já que espécies desaparecem em cascata quando predadores, polinizadores ou espécies-chave deixam de existir.
Em termos de cronologia, crianças nascidas agora (2020–2025) viverão até o fim do século, período em que os modelos científicos projetam:
• Perda de milhares de espécies terrestres e marinhas, acelerada pela destruição de habitats, poluição, mineração e mudança climática.
• Colapso de ecossistemas-chave como recifes de corais (previstos para desaparecer quase totalmente acima de +2 °C), tundras, florestas tropicais fragmentadas.
• Impactos sobre segurança alimentar, já que o desaparecimento de insetos polinizadores e peixes afeta diretamente a agricultura e a pesca.
Portanto, a manchete resume uma síntese de consenso científico: se nada for feito, as crianças de hoje presenciarão um empobrecimento massivo da vida na Terra.
