Jack would have turned 101 yesterday. In the 1960 film The Apartment, Jack delivered one of the most complex, nuanced and moving performances. In this film, like all his others, Jack makes you laugh and cry, but all the while hooked and entertained by his performance.
"Jack would say, ‘Magic time!’ every time the camera rolled. And then we knew we’d better make some magic... He was such a sweetheart. What a wonderful man. He really could do anything. He was good, very, very, very good, until the sixth or seventh take. I mean, absolutely sterling. I think Billy (Wilder) wanted to see what the contrived actor in all of us could do if he asked him to do take 16. Jack Lemmon’s final years were marked by both deep suffering and extraordinary love. In 1999, he learned he had bladder cancer, and over the next two years the treatments left him frail, weak, and very sick. Through everything, his wife, Felicia Farr, stayed by his side every single day.
They had been married for nearly 40 years, and she refused to leave him, bathing him, sitting beside his hospital bed for months, and even sleeping in a chair next to him so he would not be alone.
When Jack felt embarrassed and whispered, “I’m sorry you have to see me like this,” Felicia always replied, “You’re still you.” That simple sentence became his comfort and his strength during the hardest days.
Jack passed away in 2001 with Felicia holding his hand. Their story shows that true love is not only about the good years, but about staying, caring, and choosing each other when life becomes its most difficult.
