Let me tell y’all about a man they don’t teach you about in school. His name was Junius G. Groves—but folks came to know him as the Potato King of the World. He was born a slave in 1859. And like so many of our people back then, he walked away from nothing but chains and built himself a life from the soil up. Started out picking crops for somebody else. Then bought a little land. Then a little more. Next thing you know—he’s growing more potatoes than anybody in the country. I mean, this man was out-farming everybody. Black, white, didn’t matter. And get this: he didn’t just get rich and leave everybody behind. He built schools. He gave land to other Black families. He made sure our people could eat, learn, and own something. His house? Baby… it had 22 rooms, an elevator, AND electricity before the White House did. So no, he didn’t just grow potatoes. He grew a legacy. See, we’ve had kings. Real ones. They just wore overalls instead of crowns. And I think it’s time we remembered them. 💭 You feeling inspired? 💬 Drop a 🥔 in the comments for our ancestors who made a way out of no way.Let me tell y’all about a man they don’t teach you about in school.

Junius G. Groves (1859–1925) was a remarkable Black American farmer, landowner, and businessman who rose from the depths of slavery to become one of the wealthiest individuals in the early 20th century. Born in Green County, Kentucky, Groves was freed from slavery and became part of the "Great Exodus" to Kansas in 1879. Starting as a farmhand, his tireless work ethic allowed him to save and eventually purchase 80 acres of land. Groves earned fame as the "Potato King of the World," producing record-breaking yields of 721,500 bushels in one year. By 1888, he owned 2,000 acres and a 22-room mansion. His success expanded into orchards, a general store, and investments in mining and banking, building a legacy with his wife Matilda and their 12 children. Groves' life is a testament to the power of perseverance, family, and dedication to success. Junius George Groves, born April 12, 1859, and his wife, Mattie, were pioneers of success. Groves, known as the “Potato King of the World,” built a farming empire in Kansas. He was extraordinarily successful, particularly in potato farming, and by 1905, he was said to be “worth a half a million dollars,” which would be valued today at 17 million dollars. Groves was also a prominent philanthropist, employing hundreds of Black workers on his farm. He helped other Black families acquire land, fostering economic independence and community growth, stating “Opportunity is offered to all who wish to take advantage of it.” Groves’ success was a testament to hard work, innovation, and community support, but his wealth declined near the time of his death on August 17, 1925. Groves’ story is a powerful example of Black achievement during a time of significant racial discrimination.

History Wednesdays with Professor Wilmore ⛳ Today, we’re stepping onto the greens of Kansas City, Missouri where history was made long before it was recognized. Back in the 1920s, Black golfers were already playing the game on a potato farm owned by Junius G. Groves, known as the “Potato King.” Out of that came a brotherhood, the Heart of America Golf Club. By the 1930s, golf at Swope Park Golf Course was segregated. Two courses, but Black players were only allowed on one and only on Mondays. Then came March 1950. Reuben Benton, George Johnson, Sylvester Johnson, and Leroy Doty, known as the foursome, walked onto Course No. 1, placed their money on the counter, and played. Just like that, they integrated the course. But it didn’t come easy. Tires were slashed. Tension was real. So the foursome became five, taking turns watching the cars while the others played, determined to hold their ground. Over time, the game and the city began to change. Course No. 2 would go on to become home to the Heart of America Golf Course and the Tom Watson Golf Academy. This is more than golf. This is courage, strategy, and quiet resistance. Thank you for tuning in to History Wednesdays with Professor Wilmore on Echoes of the City, where we continue to highlight the stories that shaped Kansas City. ⛳ #EchoesOfTheCityKC #HistoryWednesdays #KansasCityHistory #BlackHistory #KCLegacy

Where do I even start? As a man learning to be a father, I struggled, but you kept pushing forward. I've seen you give it your all, and even when you failed, your smile kept me going. I'm beyond proud of your accomplishments, and this one is just another step towards greatness. Love you, big dawg... going from an eagle to a bearcat...@m.gonzo824
