This is a quote from one of my favorite behavioral psychologist, the late great Daniel Kahneman. It highlights a concept called the availability heuristic -- a mental shortcut in decision making where people rely on immediate examples that come to mind. The availability heuristic leads us to biased conclusions and judgements because we overestimate events that are most memorable or most recent and neglect things of equal or greater importance simply because they are not easily recalled or accessible. Chip and Dan Heath (two of my other favorites) expand on this by using the metaphor of a spotlight. The core difficulty of decision-making, according to the Heath brothers, lies in the fact that what's in the spotlight will rarely encompass everything needed for a good decision, and we won't always remember to shift the focus. Sometimes, we may even forget the spotlight exists, spending so much time in the narrow circle of light that we overlook the broader landscape beyond it. Sometimes the most valuable information we need for a decision is not under the spotlight but instead off the stage and out of sight. Look off stage. Han fick också Nobelpris i ekonomi 2002 för att ha visat att människor ofta tänker irrationellt. Några av hans centrala idéer handlar om att människan har två tänkandesystem: snabbt (intuition) och långsamt (reflektion). Han menar också att vi ofta faller för systematiska tankefel (biaser) och att våra känslor och intuitioner styr beslutsfattandet mer än vi tror.
