French Polynesia is one of only a few places where you legally (and ethically) swim with humpback whales. We had to float in what might as well have been the middle of the ocean for an hour waiting for the humpback we spotted to come back up for air (this can take 5-15+ minutes). There are important rules the tours have to abide by: 1. No boat can be within 100m of a whale 2. We couldn’t enter the water unless the whales were calm and relaxed This means we had to: - spot a whale beach from the boat - wait for it to relax - gear up & enter the water - swim 100m+ to where we THINK the whale was/will be (difficult in the middle of nowhere) - wait for it to surface - swim another 100m after we notice it popped up way behind us - wait for another breath Meanwhile, the rolling ocean waves pushed us around (one dude on our boat got sick). One of the coolest experiences of my life. 🐋 Full video out on the tewbs showing the full experience, what it was like, and tips if you want to do it yourself. Link on my profile.

There’s something unreal about being eye level with a whale… no tanks, no noise, just breath, heartbeats, and presence. This September we’re heading to Moorea to free dive alongside humpbacks during peak season — calm water, clear visibility, and incredible whale interactions. I've had a few people reach out and ask what if they aren't good freedivers, don't have a long breath hold or can't dive deep. On these trips all interactions are at the surface, so there is no need for a long breath hold or diving deep. The other question I get is what if I'm not scuba certified, this trip there is no scuba so no need for a scuba certification.
