ATUpwind technique theory⬇️
I’ve had lots of people ask, “how do I jump higher?” First things first > good upwind technique. So let’s get into it.
Let’s break it down it into two elements
1. Board direction. It’s all about the little tweaks in the body.
2. Edging. This resists the downwind pull of the kite
⭐️Board direction
You can rotate your board upwind by:
- Rotating your whole body upwind. LOOKING upwind, and trying to rotate your shoulders and hips as far upwind as possible. Riding one handed will help to open up your shoulders. And as I like to put it “MANIFEST!!”😂
- Straight front leg!
- Pushing your back foot out a little will increase your board angle upwind
⭐️Edging
This is the angle of your board. The stronger the wind the harder you have to edge. Without proper edging you will be skidding downwind regardless of your board direction. I like to tell people “imagine someone standing down wind of you, can they read the bottom of your board? If not, carve harder!”.
You can improve your edge technique by:
- Trusting your harness! Lean back with the torso and avoid ‘poo stance’. I like to see it as if you are doing a leg press on a machine, you are physically pushing the water away from you. It’s a very active position.
- Toes up, heels down
- Drop your hips close to the water
- Weight on the front foot!!! The most common mistake is to put most of your weight on the back foot. This creates drag and will make you sink and not go upwind. Think about physically lifting your back foot up. The reason you want to do this is to have the whole rail of the board engaged in the water.
⭐️It’s A LOT but I’d say everyone has potential to improve their upwind, no matter the level. Give it a go, it will help you to jump higher and make ground for trying lots of tricks. It can’t hurt😋

Guys, it’s super simple 💡
You’re not making a full stop — you keep riding in one direction while moving the kite in the opposite.
As a result: 💥 you get pulled, crash, or drift off on a flat board downwind 🎢
✅ Correct turn:
1️⃣ Make a stop by edging (pushing into the board)
2️⃣ Then move the kite in the opposite direction
3️⃣ Ride downwind to pick up speed
4️⃣ Only then — continue riding 🏄♂️
