My tension was off, it felt messy, and I convinced myself that colorwork just wasn’t for me. But the truth is - it wasn’t me. It was the way I was trying to learn it. Like many knitters, I went through a phase where I gifted everything I made… and then I slowly stopped. Here’s why: 1. It became stressful One year, I made hats for all my friends and family for Christmas, it was fun, unexpected, and a great way to try new techniques. The next year, I decided to knit socks for everyone. I started in July… and by November, I was completely overwhelmed. What was meant to be a thoughtful, joyful gesture turned into pressure. 2. The work is often underestimated Of course, a gift isn’t about the reaction, but it can be disheartening when people don’t realise how much time and care went into it. Sometimes, instead of appreciation, the focus would be on small imperfections. 3. People don’t realise the cost Wool is expensive, and a sweater can easily cost £70–£100 in yarn alone. After gifting a few pieces, I started getting requests for more… as if it didn’t really “cost” me anything because I enjoy knitting. But it does, both in time and money. Now, I choose carefully. Because handmade pieces aren’t just gifts, they’re time, skill, and a little piece of you. And not everyone deserves that. 💅🧶 #tricot #knitting #knit #handknit #faitmain
