A REMAKE KNIT FOR MY NEPHEW.
THE FIRST PIECE OF 2026 WAS MADE BY UNRAVELING TWO KNITS IN CAMEL AND WHITE
AND REKNITTING THEM INTO A POLO CARDIGAN.
BY USING A PUNCH CARD AND ALTERNATING CAMEL AND WHITE IN TUCK STITCH,
THE SURFACE APPEARS CALM AND GENTLE FROM A DISTANCE,
WHILE UP CLOSE, THE DEPTH AND EXPRESSION OF THE KNITTING CAN BE FELT.

The Brother KH 891 is a flatbed knitting machine that uses interchangeable punchcards to control stitch selection. As the punchcard feeds through the reader, it signals specific needles to engage or stay idle, allowing complex patterns to repeat automatically across the fabric.
Because the design is mechanically programmed, every row remains consistent from edge to edge. Hobbyists and serious knitters alike use it to create precise panels for sweaters, scarves, and other garments far faster than traditional hand knitting.

The Science of Loop Formation
This process converts a single strand of yarn into fabric through a continuous, high-speed mechanical loop-and-stitch method:
The Yarn Feed: A continuous thread of yarn is drawn down from the creel above. The metal guide arm ensures it is fed at the exact right angle and tension towards the knitting zone.
The Latch Needles (0:00 - 0:03): Look closely at the array of hooked "latch needles" riding in the rotating cylinder. As they are pushed upward by cams, the previous fabric loop slips down the shaft, opening the latch to receive the new yarn.
The Stitch Creation (0:04 - End): As the needle rapidly descends, the latch is forced closed by the old loop, trapping the newly caught yarn in the hook. The needle then pulls this new yarn right through the old loop, forming a new stitch and adding length to the fabric tube below.
The Final Result: The outcome of this rapid, repetitive mechanical action is a perfectly consistent, seamless tube of knit fabric, produced at speeds human hands could never achieve.
It is incredible to see the mechanical complexity required just to create the fabric on our backs!

I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since I started my machine knitting short course at @morley_college. It was love at first class, and I promptly got myself this beautiful knitting machine, dreaming of all the amazing knitwear I could make for myself. Then spring and summer came, along with all of their associated sewing projects. I kept telling myself that at some point I’d be able to get back to the knitting. And now, the time has finally come! 🤗🧶🧶

I can already tell that it’s one of those skills that’s going to require some serious concentrated immersion time. Mistakes will be made, and it will be painful. But there’s no way around that. My big goal is to get myself to a stage where I achieve conscious competence with it, so that even if I don’t touch the machine for several months of the year, getting back on it will be like riding a 🚲. My mini goal is to knit myself a jumper by Christmas 😬. Send me allll of the luscious knitwear inspo that you’ve been saving so I can get my creative juices going! 🙏🧶🧶
