It does not always works out 😭 and I was still shocked that after all this work I need to live with this mistake… Always wanted to have a trench coat for the spring/autumn season so I made one using some deadstock wool twill in this dark olive colour. Fitting is sometimes hard, and it is crazy to think about, but one wrong measurement can trow off all that great work you did 🤔

We sewists put so much money and time into wool coats, but if you follow the instructions 100% by the book, you might end up with a coat that starts to look tired after one season. Here are 3 super simple “off-menu” steps I always add to build the internal skeleton of the coat: 1️⃣ The Back Stay: Wool stretches, especially when wet, and long full coats have to fight against gravity. A simple solution is to draft a simple duplicate of the upper back pattern piece using a stable woven like muslin or canvas to stabilize the shoulder area. This keeps the back smooth and prevents the shoulder seams from bagging out over time. Just baste it around the upper back piece before constructing your shoulder seams. 2️⃣ Backer Buttons: If you’re using heavy coating and an interlining, there is a lot of torque on those buttons. A small backing button on the inside distributes the tension so you don’t rip a hole in your expensive fabric through repeated putting on and taking off of the coat. 3️⃣ Topstitching: It’s not just decorative! Topstitching compresses the bulky seam allowances (especially on collars and lapels) to give you that razor-sharp, high-end finish that stays flat. You don’t HAVE to use complicated couture techniques to achieve a long-lasting, amazing looking coat! Follow along for more coat making tips coming up, this time focusing on main construction!
