Another scary lab device: autoclaves 😰💥 As a chemist, I had never used one before, but last week I had to sterilize some materials to make sure no cells survived on them 🦠☠️ If you want bacteria-free samples, sterilization is essential! That’s why my biology colleagues use autoclaves all the time 🧫🔬 Inside that metal chamber, there’s steam at 121 °C above 1 bar of pressure (Normal atmospheric pressure is 1 bar). At higher pressure, water doesn’t boil at 100 °C anymore but at temperatures above that (here at 121 °C), which makes sterilization aka killing cells much more effective! BUT because the pressure is higher, you could theoretically have an explosion with super-hot steam if the device weren’t closed properly 😵😵💣 Of course, they’re built with multiple safety mechanisms. But when they start hissing as the pressure and water vapor increase inside, it’s definitely a bit scary the first time you use one 🫨😶‍🌫️ #phdlife #chemistry #microbiology #labwork #autoclave

The process of anodizing is a captivating blend of electrochemistry and material science that transforms ordinary metal surfaces into vibrant works of art. At its core, anodizing is an electrolytic passivation process used to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface of metal parts. While the video showcases the instant color transformation of titanium bolts and jewelry, the science behind it is purely mathematical. When a metal like titanium or aluminum is submerged in an electrolyte bath and hit with an electric current, the surface undergoes a controlled oxidation. Unlike paint or powder coating which sits on top of the metal, this oxide layer grows out of the base material, making it incredibly durable and resistant to wear and corrosion. What makes the colors appear so magically is a phenomenon called thin-film interference. As the voltage is increased, the thickness of the transparent oxide layer grows. When light hits the metal, some of it reflects off the top of the oxide layer while some passes through and reflects off the metal underneath. These light waves then interfere with each other, reinforcing certain wavelengths and canceling others out. By precisely controlling the voltage on the power supply—as seen in the video where the dial moves from 3.7V to 43.0V—you can tune the thickness of the layer to produce a specific color of the rainbow.
